Niaomee Guerra in stoppage time saw the “Green Machine Girls” of St Augustine Secondary lift the BGT&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) girls “Big Four” title yesterday.

The disappointment belonged to Bishop’s High School of Tobago, as ‘Gustine’s 1-0 triumph denied them their first national title at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

This after Bishop’s threatened to take their opponents to a shootout just as in their semi-final against Fyzabad Secondary, which Bishop’s won 3-1 from the penalty spot.

The match turned out to be a keenly contested one, where more clinical finishing could have seen either team being victorious.

The best goalscoring chances came in the first half, and Bishop’s goalkeeper Nateisha Radgman came up big to keep her team in the match.

In the 20th minute, she denied St Augustine’s Laurelle Theodore a certain goal, hooking the ball away after being left for dead by her opponent, who proceeded to lob two approaching defenders.

She also kept out Guerra, who also put a shot over.

Bishop’s actually hit the net in the 26th, but Shervell Ravello was ruled offside.

In the second half, Bishop’s gun shy approach kept them from scoring as they hesitated to take shots. St Augustine fared no better with their attempts to walk into goal.

But just when the match looked destined for kicks from the penalty mark, Guerra found the magic touch, driving from open space from 25 metres out, the bounce defeating an otherwise solid Radgman.

That was all she wrote for Bishop’s, as the girls’ Big Four trophy now heads back to the East.
