W Connection secured a top two finish in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship qualifying table following a 1-0 win over T&TEC FC on Tuesday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium in the second clash of a Digicel Pro League Championship Round Two Match Day Six double header.

It was from a superb strike by wingback-turned-midfielder Joevin Jones in a 28th minute set piece that Connection got the lone item to send the Stuart Charles Fevrier coached side into the 2012 CFU Club Championship scheduled to begin in March.

Connection leads the qualifying table with 21 points, followed by T&TEC FC and Caledonia AIA both with 19 points and faces each other next Tuesday in their final do or die qualifying match in Round Two Match Day Seven for the remaining spot.

Connection won the set piece some 26 yards out, and from a little tap forward, Jones penetrated the wall using the window created by teammates Gerrard Williams and Johan Peltier with a powerful left footed strike to beat goalkeeper Marvin Phillip for the 1-0 score.

It was a keenly contested first half, but in the second period Connection dominated on chances, however failed to concrete the victory well before the end.

Seconds into the second period midfielder Jomal Wiliams, who had a brilliant performance in the opening half, attempted a shot from distance but didn’t force much work out of Phillip who thwarted the effort comfortably.

Connection had an excellent opportunity to double the advantage in the 52nd minute with Johan Peltier only managing to find the side netting after rounding goalkeeper Phillip when he was played on by Jerrel Britto.

And another in the 59th minute Britto slipped a shot wide of the upright in which he should have found the back of the netting although holding off a defensive challenge.

Connection goalie Jan Michael Williams also had to be credited for the victory, when in the 75th minute he preserved the 1-0 score by pulling off a fine save by tipping behind T&TEC substitute Jamal Ayres’ deflected effort.

San Juan Jabloteh slipped out of the running on Tuesday night with 16 points on the qualifying table following a 1-1 draw against Caledonia at the Larry Gomes Stadium with recent signing Keon Trim equalizing in the 28th minute following an 8th minute strike by Jamal Gay.

And in other Round Two Match Day Six scores DIRECTV North East Stars rebounded from a two nil first half deficit to register a 3-2 win over Police FC in the first clash at the Ato Boldon Stadium and in the opening fixture at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Defence Force whipped St. Ann’s Rangers 3-1 thanks to a hattrick by Richard Roy, two of which were from the penalty spot.

Connection also leads the Digicel Pro League Championship ladder for the first time this season with its 21 points, while Caledonia follows in second with 20 points, T&TEC FC and Jabloteh in third and fourth respectively with 19 points, Defence Force and North East Stars in fifth and sixth respectively with 12 points and Rangers and Police down at the bottom in seventh and eight positions after Tuesday’s round of matches.
