The Manhattanville men’s soccer team dropped its season-opening contest on the road against non-conference Richard Stockton College, 5-2, at the G. Larry James Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Valiants got on the board in the 16th minute, as sophomore Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario)connected with the reigning Freedom Conference Player of the Year, junior midfielder Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago), to give the visiting team a 1-0 lead.

Richard Stockton answered back with a pair of goals eight minutes apart, to take a 2-1 lead into the half, as Brian Thomsen and Clay Gashlin scored for the home squad.  The Ospreys added their third goal of the contest in the 47th minute as Kyle Evans fed Rafael Durate to give Stockton a two-goal advantage.

The Valiants answered back in the 56th minute, as senior Mitchel Ghiggia (Port Chester, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal to cut the margin at 3-2. Late in the contest, the Ospreys added two more goals in the 63rd and 72nd minutes of action with Durate’s second of the match and the final goal coming from Ali Gocmez.

Both teams finished with 15 total shots each; with the home team taking eight shots on target, while Manhattanville had five shots on goal. In the cages, Lou Herring and senior Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y.)  both made three saves.

Manhattanville (0-1) will remain on the road and travel north to take on non-conference Vassar College on Saturday at 2 p.m. Richard Stockton (1-0) will travel down to compete in the Christopher Newport Tournament over the weekend and will take on Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 5 p.m.
