As Chicago Fire made cuts to its roster for next season, T&T winger Joevin Jones is guaranteed to be under contract with the American MLS club for 2016. But countryman Daneil Cyrus’ loan deal has expired and he will leave the club.

Thirteen players were left in a safe position with the club but nine other players were declined options.

“History has shown that the key to having a successful team in MLS requires a solid nucleus of players who have been together for some time,” Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said. “The players adversely affected are talented individuals as well, who we thank for their contributions to our Club and wish well in their careers going forward.”

Jones has been a force for T&T this year on the international stage and has been in good form for the Fire.

“I think this year was pretty good, especially for the national team,” Jones said. “My first season in the MLS has been a great experience.

“The level has been quite good and the club is ambitious and is at a very good level which I am happy about. I know we will be looking to continue improving and looking to achieve greater results in the new season.”

Commenting more on his performances for T&T which saw the team reach the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and make a two-game unbeaten start to the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Jones said, “I’m enjoying my form for the national team.

“I think I’ve come out of my shell now with the national team. I am more confident, playing more freely and really focusing on doing my best on what the coach wants and what is best for my teammates with me on the pitch.”
