Mark Gower has insisted there is more than just goals with Jason Scotland after describing the striker as a joy to play with.
But Swansea’s wideman, impressive in the victory over Wolves, admitted the Trinidad frontman responded to pressure over his place in perfect fashion with his double at the Liberty.

Scotland had been dropped from Roberto Martinez’s squad for the midweek win in Preston, Gorka Pintado given the nod to start.

But, having come back refreshed, Scotland put in a match-winning performance with a promise of more to come.

And, although the display was good enough alone, Gower admits the brace Scotland bagged will help the striker’s cause after criticisms for his lack of goals so far this year.

“It looked like dropping him did the trick,” said Gower. “It obviously worked because he’s gone out and shown just what a good player he is.

“And it’s great playing with him when he’s in that kind of form because you know the ball will hold up with him, you know you can make your runs without him giving it away and he will use you if it’s right.

“He’s great off both feet and there’s more to just goals with him – he’s got his own unique style and if things don’t come off, with the way he’s laid back, then it can frustrate.

“So I’m really pleased for him because he was under a bit of pressure, but got his goals which speak for themselves.

“He will get more at this level, I’m sure of that. We just have to get him the ball around the box and, if people are patient with him, he will do well, I’m sure of that.”

Gower was himself denied a first goal in Swansea colours when the offside flag ruled out a 34th-minute strike, controversy surrounding whether the offending Jordi Gomez at the far post had actually got a touch on the ball.

And, after arguably his best display since arriving from Southend in the summer, Gower concedes he could do with one being allowed to help him make a bigger impact in the side.

“I didn’t think he touched it – not that it mattered in the end,” he said. “I’ve hit the post a couple of times – but hopefully it will come soon.

“I’m sure getting one will have the right impact on me and hopefully it’s just a matter of time.”
