Trinidad and Tobago stars look to set up a PFA
By Zidane (walsall-mad.co.uk)

Saturday 24th March 2007

Gillingham stars lead the way and others to follow.

Trinidad and Tobago's international stars are backing a push to have a Professional Footballers Association set up in their homeland, in an attempt to end the turmoil gripping their game.

Seven months after taking part in their first ever World Cup, the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation claims it is now close to being broke, and apparently paid each World Cup representative just £485 for their services in Germany. This lead to widespread unrest within Trinidadian Football and resulted in a mass walkout from international availability, and even the cessation of all competitions in Trinidad only narrowly escaped.

The situation led Gillingham players Brent Sancho, Ian Cox and Kelvin Jack to come together in an attempt to help ease the problems, and the first of what is hoped to be an ongoing series of fundraisers was held at the Hackney Empire in London last night. They explained to their club's official website www.gillinghamfootballclub.co.uk about the fundraiser they held to raise awareness:

"It was part of a fundraiser to help with the creation of a players association in Trinidad and Tobago, and we raised plenty of money with the auctioning of football shirts from teams around the country, including Gillingham, Chelsea, Leicester City and an Arsenal banner, as well as other items.

"It is disappointing and shocking that our federation can say there is no money to fund football, especially since going to the World Cup for the first time in our history and signing contracts with some major companies. Words can't describe how disappointing that is, but the players are still upbeat and willing to play for their country, but we realise there are still some very important issues to sort out," Jack said.

"Trinidad and Tobago football needs proper direction and leadership, because it does have so much potential. There are so many players playing in England and could achieve a whole lot with proper guidance and leadership.

"There are plenty of excuses from the powers that be, but one you won't hear is 'we're not doing well enough. There is too much criticism of its own players, and it is sad the federation can do that to the same people who graced the world stage. You wouldn't see the Italian or English FA's involved in open dispute with its players, and to be honest I just don't know why that is the situation in Trinidad.

"Sometimes unions get a reputation for being opponents of everything, but we want to make it crystal clear that a Players Association would not want to be in opposition with the Federation. We simply want to help the players with their educations, finances, and to think about life after football," Jack said.

The trio are hoping to head to Trinidad in the summer for more fundraising initiatives, and for the official launch of the PFA. They will be also hoping to get the support of other exports such as Hector Sam and Clayton Ince, so the country's footall infrastructure can match their neighbours allowing them to concentrate on football matters if they qualify for another FIFA World Cup.

A players Union was formed about three years ago......not one ass done.

I have been asking for ages what these men were paid per game at the WC.

If that amt. is true, then teh TTFF must really explain themselves.

Good luck, TT footballers really need a functioning Union.

Peace,

Well done guys, you all may not gain a lot from it right now, because of the amount of football left in you. However, this will definitely pave a nice road for the youths that will represent T&T in the future. HIGHLY BLESSED.

Empire launch for a Caribbean PFA

hackneygazette.sport@archant.co.uk
29 March 2007
TRINIDAD and Tobago international Kelvin Jack hopes that an event in Hackney, which was staged last week, will help him in his quest to launch a professional footballers association for the Caribbean island.

Jack, who plays for Coca-Cola 1 side Gillingham, is at the forefront of a campaign to set up a PFA in his homeland.

Trinidad, who reached the 2006 World Cup, have a professional league, but no association for their players, meaning injured footballers can often receive no wages and, in some cases, have their contracts cancelled with no compensation.

But Jack, along with fellow countryman and Gillingham team-mates Brent Sancho and Ian Cox, is hoping that will soon change, starting with the event in Hackney.

The football-themed play "Sing Yer Heart Out For the Lads" which had a three night run at the Hackney Empire last week, was helping, having ticket sales to fund the operating costs of the players' union for the first year. The union should be self-financing from then on.

Jack, 30, told the Gazette: "It's about time Trinidad and Tobago had a professional players association.

"It's extremely important in terms of negotiating a lot of things. With a players association in place, footballers would be a lot more comfortable and be able to concentrate on what they do best - playing football.

"I think there would have probably been more professional footballers coming out of Trinidad if this had been in place a few years ago. The PFA over here in England is so important. For example, when players retire, the PFA can help them get into coaching. They're so helpful for players when they do retire as football is a very short career."

Much of the preliminary work for a Trinidad and Tobago PFA has already completed, with Hackney-born Shaka Hislop, who played for West Ham last season, expected to become the union's figurehead.

Jack, who has 31 caps for his country, added: "Myself, Shaka, Brent Sancho and Ian Cox have been trying to get a player association sorted for the last few years.

"But being players ourselves means it has been very difficult, especially because we also spend most of our time here in Britain.

"But it's something we've not given up on, we want to see it through and hopefully we can get this set up in the not-too-distant future.

"The Hackney Empire event will have hopefully let everybody know that Trinidad and Tobago football is professional and we're trying to make it even more so. We're trying to help players negotiate with their clubs and help them after football as well."

The event at the Empire was strongly supported by the "Let's Kick Racism Out Of Football" initiative.

There was a raffle and an auction of signed football shirts from various clubs, on opening night, as the campaign got under way.
