The 2nd annual SW Futsal Invitational tournament will kick-off on October 10 with over 50 teams vying for over $45,000 in prize money at the Eastern Regional Indoor Arena, Tacarigua.

The event will feature action in the men and women’s categories as well as three junior divisions.

SW Touring, the founder of the competition, has teamed up with the University of the West Indies Student Guild for this year’s event which will see 10 hours of futsal compeititon.

The partnership intends to follow the mandate and vision of FIFA, football’s world governing body “to promote and structure the sport of futsal”.

Futsal is a 5-a-side game using hockey sized goal posts and a size four ball with a reduced bounce. Futsal places considerable demand on a player’s technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness.

The theme for this year’s event is “Be Champions” and fans are invited to come out and support their favourite team. There will be a fusion of sport an entertainment as the venue will be transformed into the ultimate family-oriented “Futsal Nation” with moko jumbies, bouncy castles, a miniature football field, food courts, a non-alcoholic bar and many more attractions.

Spectators will also be treated to Ball Juggling competitions, half-line shootouts and exhibition matches. Friendly and fierce rivalries will be decided between community teams, clubs, the corporate community, tertiary institutions, media and the armed forces.

“Registration is open and we are expected to attract 24 male teams, 16 female teams and 24 youth teams (Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16),” sais event promoter Geoffrey Edwards.
