Former sponsors of the Big Six—the final round of the League Championship—Lucozade Sport, has stepped up its involvement with the TT Pro League with the newest initiative on the knockout calendar, the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield tournament.
The Pro Bowl was the first knockout for the past four seasons, but that has been shifted to close off the 2009 calendar in November/December with new branding partner Digicel following a pullout by former sponsors Courts Trinidad and Tobago Limited.

Lucozade Sport will be in the spotlight as the newest knockout title holders, and will kick off the knockout scheme for the 2009 season on Friday 29 May with the qualifiers of the Goal Shield at the Marvin Lee Stadium.

Lucozade Sport has pumped $85,000 into the newest initiative by the League—the Goal Shield which is geared at encouraging loads of goal with its unique prize money system.

The innovative prize structure with the cash for goals system will see the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield champions take away $20,000 and the runners-up will get $10,000.

But that money will grow according to goals scored. The Champions will get an additional $1,000 for every goal scored in the quarter-final, $2,000 for every goal scored in the semi-final and $3,000 for every goal scored in the Final.

The runners-up will also see their prize money grow according to goals, with $500 for every quarter-final goal, $1,000 for every Semi-final goal and $1,500 for every goal scored in the Final.

This prize money structure will not only allow the winners and runners-up healthy purses at the end of the tournament, but more so give an added incentive for more goals to be scored throughout the tournament.

Christian Tom Yew, Regional Brand Manager for Lucozade Sport said that his company sincerely believes in the mission at the TT Pro League which is to support football in Trinidad and Tobago.

“I believe that this tournament will be a great one because goals win matches. We are going to make sure that everyone enjoys this tournament,” said Tom Yew at the official launch on Tuesday morning at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Executive Lounge.

Pro League CEO Dexter Skeene applauded Lucozade Sport for their committed involvement over the years despite the difficult economic circumstances.

Skeene explained that the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield is an excellent way to motivate and inspire players to push themselves to become the best that they can be.

“We are always looking at ways on how to lift the bar in the quest for excellence,” he said. “We are always daring to believe and in so doing, we are always looking at our products—the various competitions.”

“We push the envelope in the ongoing effort to raise the bar, but we remain true to our ethos, philosophy, mission, vision and purpose,” he continued.

Just as Tom Yew, Skeene believes that the 2009 Lucozade Sport Goal Shield will be an exciting one.

“Our research has shown us that fans want to experience. They want to turn up at TT pro League events and be part of an experience. They want excitement and that’s what they’re going to get in this tournament,” promised the Pro League CEO.
