Trinidad took the lead in the elimination round of the CONCACAF football tournament at the National Stadium last night when two late goals gave them a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands Antilles.

The Trinidadians thoroughly deserved victory for throughout the whole match they were the outstanding team.

Their goals were scored by schoolboy outside left Warren Archibald and inside left Pat Small.

Netherlands Antilles came within inches of scoring after only 20 seconds — and they never looked dangerous again in the first half. The man who almost put them in the lead was inside-forward Reminico Jacobs, whose low drive from the edge of the penalty area hit an upright before Trinidad goalkeeper Mouttet smothered the ball.

Then Trinidad, inspired by the performances of two spectacular schoolboy, wingers — Everald Cummings and Warren Archibald — went on the offensive.

After six minutes, the ebullient Cummings sold three quick dummies as he jinxed his way into the penalty area, but instead of passing to either of two unmarked forwards he tried a shot himself and Richardson had no trouble palming the ball ever the bar.

The most fantastic scramble came in the 20th minute when Cummings danced into the penalty box. He shot hard and the ball cannoned off Richardson's knees. In the wild scrummage that followed Trinidad shots were twice cleared off the goal-line before Vos out the hall behind for a corner.

The once or twice Antilles' attack came into the game it looked even less menacing than on Wednesday night when they drew 1-1 with Jamaica. The only shot of note came from Reminico Jacobs who produced a first-rate save from Mouttet with a high ball which seemed destined for the corner of the net.

But it was 99 per cent Trinidad in the first half. In moments of panic the Antilles' defenders desperately kicked for touch, as the Trinidadian swarmed around them. Right half and skipper Sedley Joseph, was a six-foot-plus tower of strength at half-back, but even he could not install the little bit of method into Trinidad's play which would have produced goals instead of near misses.

In the second half Trinidad again held the upper hand from the start and after only three minutes had their first chance when Alvin Corneal who had switched his inside left position with Archibald on the left wing shot hard and low from an Archibald pass. Keeper Richardson had to dive quickly to the left to save.

After fifteen minutes of play the Trinidad boys got probably the easiest chance of the match. Archibald weaved through three defenders right up to the goal-area line. Quickly the Antilles defenders were on him again and left Conrad completely unmarked on the left. Archibald slipped through to Cummings, who with the goalkeeper alone to beat from twenty yards out, shot wide.

Trinidad got the well needed and indeed deserved goal after half an hour from the boots of inside right Pat Small, who nipped in a left wing corner from Corneal with a back-flick between the keeper and the upright.

The Antilles then brought off another of their frail attacks but, unlike Jamaica, Trinidad never relaxed with their 1-0 lead and less than a minute later Archibald, the man who put so much life in the Trinidad attack, shot hard and low with his left foot from just on the goal-area. Keeper Richardson hardly had time to move and Trinidad were two up and looked certain of the first victory in the elimination round.

In the 42nd minute Antilles scored their second goal of the tournament from the first penalty awarded. Right back Murren was adjudged to have fouled outside left Angel Perez on a run-through in the penalty area and Perez himself blasted home.
