A MAN down for most of the second half, Dream Team showed their resilience with a superb defensive effort against Flemming FC to scrape into the final of the Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond Football League with a 4-2 win on kicks from the penalty mark on Saturday.

With a place in the final up for grabs, both teams hardly played at their flowing best with Dream Team getting the better chances throughout the match but unable to get past an inspired Rondell Simon in goal.

But despite Simon stealing the spotlight in regulation time, it was his opposite number Kyle Ferreira who proved the hero with two stunning saves in the shootout after it was 0-0 at regulation. After both teams had scored their first attempts, Simon saved a shaky effort by Stephan Kerr but Ferreira responded with an equally good stop off Flemming forward Hakeem Byer.

Dream Team went ahead 2-1 with their next kick before Ferreira came up trumps once more with a stunning double effort to keep out Kendall Roberts’ attempt. Both sides scored their next try and Dream Team’s Keryl “Gino” Garcia held his nerve to fire his team into the final. Earlier, Dream Team started off in the front foot, Garcia combining with lone striker Patrick Parris before slipping Leon Durity through on goal but his left-footer flashed high.

On a counterattack soon after, Parris raced on to a through pass and was taken out just outside the box by the onrushing Simon. Garcia failed to trouble the keeper, though, as the half ended 0-0 with the Flemming supporters getting disgruntled by their team’s disappointing showing.

The second half started similar to the first with Dream Team dominating proceedings. But with the “home” team on the ropes, Dream Team were dealt a self-inflicted blow when midfielder Kwame John was given a straight red card for cursing. Dream Team coach Hayden Diaz changed gears immediately, looking to set up shop to the final whistle.

Dream Team will face the victor of yesterday’s other semi-final between reigning champs Boys Town and 2011 winners Xpress Overcome on Saturday.
