GREMIO FC kicked off their Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond League campaign with a battling 3-1 victory over Coca All-Stars in muddy conditions at the Fishing Pond Recreation Ground on Sunday.

Dwaine Ovid fired Gremio in front in the first half with a rifled effort from outside the box which proved the difference till the half.

Coca came fighting back in the second period, though, Matthew Robinson signalling their intent with a long range effort that sailed over the bar immediately upon the resumption. Ovid was proving a handful, though, at the other end, collecting a ball on top the area before checking onto his right foot and flashing a shot wide of the post.

Gremio doubled their advantage soon after through Kendon Sutton who received a perfectly weighted pass on the left and unleashed a rocket that flew between the flailing hands of the Coca goalie and into the roof of the net.

Looking in cruise control, though, Gremio saw their deficit halved when a long throw caught them lapsing. The dreadlocked Dean Marcano’s flick on found an unmarked Akiel Clarke stealing at the far post to head the ball into the net.

With time running out, Coca began to push forward in search of the equaliser and paid the price on the counter. The speedy Rick Henry eluded his marker down the right and drilled in a low cross that found substitute Aaron Colastic all alone to bundle the ball across the line and seal the win.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Take That and Cool It came from a goal down to beat Quash Trace Ball Players 2-1. After a goalless first period, the game sprung to life when Brian Sookraj scored to put Quash Trace ahead. Goals from Kerwin Lara and Maurice Billy turned things around though as Cool It walked away with all three points.

Action continues today with Cosmos FC against Dream Team at 3.45pm while Blu Magic meet Take That and Cool It tomorrow at the same time.
