St Francois Girls College lifted their second consecutive North Zone league title in the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) with a 7-2 thrashing of St Joseph Convent on Sunday.

The match was played at St Joseph Convent Ground, St Clair, in front of a sizable support for both teams. Diamond Small scored a hat-trick to take her season tally to 10 goals, while Astride Joseph netted a double, together with single items from Della Joseph and Dhaakira Solomon. Amanda Garcia scored two goals for the second placed St Joseph team.

At half-time, the Belmont school were 5-0 up on their nearest challengers in the league, putting them comfortably in the drivers seat to lifting another North Zone title.

St Francois made their debut in the North Zone Girls Championship last season, taking the North Zone league title, the North East Intercol title, then to be defeated in the National finals to South Zone’s Debe Secondary.

It is also the second consecutive year in which the Jason Spencer coached team won the north Zone title with a match to spare.

After taking over the team in 2008, he won the Under-15 Division knock-out title in the same year, before leading an Under-19 team to a SSFL Senior Division North Zone league title in 2009.

In 2009 the team also won the North Zone knock-out title in the Senior Division, and then went on to win the National Title. St Francois were promoted to the Championship Division in the following season, when they began their dominance in the North Zone.

After going down 3-1 to St Joseph Convent in the first match of the season, St Francois recovered to win their following eight matches, which only one (against Maple Leaf) was won by default.

In the East Zone, El Dorado were 3-1 winners over St George’s College, thanks to a Patrice Campbell double and an own goal. Kadisha De Freitas scored the consolation for St George’s. St Augustine were also winners, 2-1 over Arima North.

El Dorado remain trailing St Augustine by two points, but remain with a match in hand and will have the opportunity to take the zonal title with wins in their following two matches.

St Augustine will play their final match of the zone against fifth placed St George’s on Thursday. El Dorado will play a rescheduled match against St George’s today, before playing their final league match against Toco on Thursday.
