Three newcomers in $.3m bmobile Super League

E-mail Print PDF

T&T Football Federation Champion of Champions winners, East/West Coaching School; runner-up T&TEC and Queen’s Park CC will all make their debut in the 2009 bmobile National Super League. The 13-team league will kick off on May 3 with matches at some new venues, aimed at making the league more community oriented. This was stated by Anthony Harford, tournament coordinator, during the launch of the 2009 season—the sixth year of the league and fourth sponsored by bmobile to the tune of $300,000—at the Queen’s Park Oval, Banquet Hall, Tragarete Road, yesterday.

Last year’s league and knockout winners, the T&T Under-20 will not compete as they are preparing for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup Finals in Egypt from September 24. Like previous years, the Super League clubs will also compete in the T&TFF FA Trophy and T&T Pro League Toyota Classic competitions, giving them a chance to walk away with trophies on four separate fronts. A new segment of the Super League will be the introduction of the Super League youth competitions to be contested in the Under-15 and Under-17 age-groups all sponsored by the Fifa under its “Win with Concacaf programme” which focuses mainly on youth development.

The programme is to be introduced in 22 Concacaf countries, including T&T, to the sum of $8 million with T&T expected to received close to $2 million. Harford warned that the 13 clubs in this edition of the Super League without youth clubs will be allowed to compete this year but will have to put in place youth teams and show proper youth set-ups or face being expelled from the competition altogether for the 2010 season.
