Trinidad and Tobago’s Under 15 footballers advanced to meet Guatemala in Thursday’s semi final of the CFU Under 15 Youth Cup by way of a 2-1 win over Suriname at the Marvin Lee Stadium on Tuesday.

Goals by Sheldon Bateau in the 56th minute and Franz Husbands in the 80th minute paced the young “Warriors” to their fourth win of the tournament. But this time, the team had to come up with probably their best overall performance to get past the stubborn Suriname outfit.

Both teams battled out to a 0-0 first half in front of a decent crowd of about 2,000 at the venue and on a partially heavy surface. But they handled it well and the away team never gave up as was evident with the goal near the end.

The first goal arrived when midfielder Sean De Silva delivered a ball into the box from the left and Bateau was on spot to guide it past goalkeeper Romario Fonkel from close range to the delight of the home fans.

The goal seemed to lift the level of T&T’s play but they still found it hard to break down the Surinamese defense,

De Silvan again created space for Jean Luc Rochford but his effort was a feeble one through to the goalie.

T&T’s second goal was a clinical finish. Husbands was in the area for a left side cross after the defense failed to avert danger and he made no mistake in heading home from point blank range.

T&T then let in their first goal of the tournament when Resando Darson caught the T&T defense napping and he sneaked the ball inside the left corner past an advancing Jesse Fullerton.

By then  T&T were already planning for their semi-final clash against a spirited Guatemalan outfit which comes off at 7pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Thursday.

The Guatemalans were 4-0 winners over St Vincent and the Grenadines, dedicating their win to goalkeeper Jorge Velasquez who suffered  depressed skull fracture in Sunday’s match against Aruba.

In the other quater final fixture at the Hasely Crawford Stadim, Jamaica had to thank Christopher Waugh for a 79th minute goal to get past Martinique 1-0. They will now meet Canada in the other semi final match from 5pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Thursday. Canada got goals from Greg Smith (22nd), Christopher Sheriffe (42nd), Mohammed Sylla (45th   and 50th), Antonio Rago (60th) and Cristobal Robles (78th).
