Guaya United established themselves as one of the favourites for championship honours after scoring a convincing 4-1 victory over a representative Mayaro League team in an exhibition match to mark the official launch of the 2012 bpTT Mayaro Football League season on Saturday.

Spurred on by newly appointed coach and former national player, Ron La Forest, Guaya United raced to a 3-0 score at the interval, with goals from star striker Jody Allsop, captain Ryan Stewart and Earlon Thomas.

The youthful Mayaro representative team pulled a goal back in the second half through Kessy Frontin. Allsop restored Guaya’s three-goal advantage with a splendid header in the 70th minute.

Coach La Forest said he was pleased with the performance of his team, with players executing the ‘game plan’ worked out before the match.

Played at the Mayaro Recreation Ground, the match was watched by a couple hundred spectators. This is the 13th year that energy company BP Trinidad and Tobago is sponsoring the league.

Earlier, Rene-Marie Wilson, manager, Mayaro Resource Centre, assured organisers and players that energy company bpTT was fully committed to sponsorship of the league as one of the stellar sporting activity in Mayaro and surrounding communities. “BPTT is convinced that our confidence is well paced in the hands of the organisers and officials to relive the legacy of past football glory in Mayaro.

I see the will and the passion to become great again,” she said. Raymond Cozier, Councillor for Mayaro/Guayaguayare, appealed to the players, and the wider community, to full use of the “magnanimous support our football” by bpTT, since many communities were struggling for such sponsorship.

“We want to feel proud again through our sporting prowess, not only in football but in other sports as well. There is no magic wand to do that. Both players and coaches have to make sacrifices for us to get back to the top,” Cozier advised.

Matthew Pierre, public relations officer of Illusions Sports Club and league coordinator, said the club was happy to receive the approval of bpTT for staging the competitions for the second year, pledging that everything would be done to ensure the standard of the football was of the highest standard.

Pierre said plans were underway to play matches at several venues, such as La Savanne, Ortoire, Biche and Union, to take the ‘spirit of the football’ to the various communities. Competition in the Under-18 and Under-16 divisions get underway on Wednesday, with the seniors scheduled to take the field within the next two weeks.

A total of 13 teams have already registered for the competitions. Defending champions in both league and knockout competitions in the senior division are Mayaro Boys Sports Club. Guaya United were runners-up in both competitions.
