The final four in the Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond Big 8 Football Tournament has been decided. A new champion will definitely be crowned in two weeks time as Gremio emphatically ousted 2014 winners Blu Magic 3-0 on Sunday at the Fishing Pond Recreation Ground.
Starting 1-0 down, Blu Magic needed to put in a good first half performance to make up for the deficit but found themselves down 3-0 at the interval. Goals from Randy Henry and Sherman Degazon put Gremio firmly in control at the half as Blu Magic saw their title hopes slipping away.
A determined effort to get back in the game in the second period proved fruitless and a red card for obscene language to a Blu Magic player made their task improbable.Gremio would pick up the much deserved victory and are now just two wins away from bettering their 2014 runners- up finish.
In the earlier game, G Madrid came from a goal down against Boys Town to prevail 3-1 and march into the semis.
Boys Town had the perfect start though, capitalising on an indirect free-kick after a back pass was handled by the G Madrid goalkeeper.
Midfielder Isaiah Smith did the honours, driving in the indirect free-kick into the back of the net to put his team in front early in the first half. Boys Town maintained their advantage to the break but could not stave off their rivals for the full game. G Madrid’s Derron Lewis restored parity through a penalty just after the game recommenced while G Madrid substitute Maurice Billy killed off the game with a late double.
The semis kick-off on Saturday with Dream Team against G Madrid at 3pm while Fishing Pond Revival meet Gremio on Sunday at the same time. The Grand Final is scheduled for 3pm on November 7 with the first prize of $40,000 up for grabs. The runners- up receive $8,000 while the third/fourth playoff starts at 1pm for $5,000 and $4,000 respectively.
