President and CEO of Sports and Games FC Santa Rosa, Keith Look Loy, has emphasised that endurance along with both mental and physical fitness are of utmost importance if they are to crowned National Super League champions at the end of the season.
In an interview with Newsday, Look Loy acknowledged that the team is currently playing quite well and boast the best defensive record thus far, only conceding seven goals in nine games.
Although the team is performing well defensively, offensively Rashad Griffith has been behind a majority of the goals, scoring seven in eight games, proving to be the talisman going forward.
According to Look Loy, a lot of the “dirty” work in the middle of the park comes from ‘midfield maestro’ Durwin Ross as he is responsible for the defensive duties before the back-line.
However, while he is happy about the current momentum of the squad, he is preaching patience and not looking too far ahead. He mentioned that the current starting 11 has been playing together since 2014 which aids in their cohesion. Although two new players were added to the team at the start of this season, squad depth was a factor he acknowledged that may possibly hinder their title race.
He is urging all players though to keep focus on each match individually.
He stated, “Last year both the title and relegation were decided on the last match day which depicts the strong and competitive nature of the league.
No one wins easy!” With the new sponsorship deal with Sports and Games at the start of this season, Look Loy hopes to make other signings during the next transfer window to solidify the team. He is focused on maintaining an all-round, well-balanced team that would keep improving each season. FC Santa Rosa will be facing 10thplaced Guaya United at 4.30pm in Guaya on Sunday.
Asked of his expectations of the game, Look Loy noted that Guaya lost a couple of their players this season and are not quite the team that they used to be and it would be a very competitive fixture as it usually is.
“We need to win the match in order to keep momentum and the team knows that if we do, we would be at the top of the table after 10 games, once the current league leaders fail to win theirs,” he said.
