Trinidad and Tobago’s “2018” Football Team recently won the Under-Ten Regional Eight-A-Side Football Championships held in Barbados on October 1-2.

The football tournament was hosted by All Sports Promotion.

Coach of the team Ian Yorke explained, “in our vision we selected the name ‘2018’ because of the abundance of talent from the youngsters whom we foresee will be on the national team preparing for the 2018 Football World Cup to be held in Russia.

“The team ‘2018’ qualified for the tournament as first-runners-up to Eastern Boys RC when the Republic Cup local leg was staged here in Trinidad.

“However 2018 played unbeaten from among the eight other teams throughout the Regional tournament even defeating the national champions Eastern Boys RC.

“The captain of the team similarly named after professional footballer Dwight Yorke was voted the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

“Ian also copped the Most Goals by scoring six as well as the Best Goal of the tournament when he netted with a direct strike from a corner kick.

“The nine-year-old Ian Yorke who is no relative to his T&T icon and namesake, is a Standard-Three pupil at Arima Boys RC School and already has two national football medals to his credit.

“He has been a member of the triumphant Arima Boys RC School Champion football team for 2009 and 2010 at Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Under-13 Football competition,” the coach says.

The “2018” Football Team administrators will like to thank all the corporate business houses that helped them financially to go to Barbados and do Trinidad and Tobago proud, since no assistance came from their many requests with the Ministry of Sport.
