Forty years ago, May 1974 to be exact, I saw a football match in
Germany. It wasn't World Cup or European Cup or anything of the sort. I
t was just an ordinary club match in Cologne between two teams whose
names meant nothing to me. I never bothered to find out. What I do
remember is that the stadium was packed to capacity, there was a great
deal of noise, and mine was the only black face in the crowd.
