DEFENDING South Zone League champions, Debe High School is eager to get back on the competitive circuit as they count down the final days for the official start of the 2012/ 2013 BGTT/ First Citizens Girls Secondary Schools Football League, which kicks off on September 13.

Last year, the three-time triple-crown winners were only capable of successfully defending their South Zone League title. They were dethroned by Vessigny High School and were ousted in the League finals by eventual winners El Dorado East.

Manager of the south-based team, Clive Auguste revealed that they will stick to their original strategy for the upcoming season.

“We will go in taking it one game at a time. This has been our strategy for years and it has proven to be a successful one,” he stated. Throughout the competitive period of 2008 - 2010, Debe High became the only school to cop all three titles in three consecutive years.

This historic record has never been produced by any other local girls school team and still stands as one of the most successful performances in school’s football. Once again, Debe will be vying for top honours in all categories. Auguste was confident in his side and revealed that they will be retaining most of their players from the previous season.

“We still have the likes of a lot of our seasoned players. Patrice Vincent (captain), Kayla Taylor, Akilah Sparks and Kazzie Grant (goalkeeper) are still in the squad, so we have a good bit of experience on the inside. The bulk of the squad is still here,” he added.

The team manager stated also that the squad has been training since last week and has been physically and mentally preparing themselves for the competitive season. He also made mention of a new assistant coach “Jeff”.

According to Auguste the assistant would play a key role in reducing the workload of Debe High coach, Arnold Murphy.

“With the inclusion of our additional coach, we expect to have a bit more overall development. I think both coaches will click and we’ll have a good fusion with their experience and the rest of the team,” he continued.

Auguste expressed confidence in the squad and is optimistic that it would be a successful season. He was also grateful to the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT) for enhancing their previously dilapidated school and upgrading their grounds.

The manager was especially pleased that the school now had its own “home ground.

“Kudos to the Sports Company for their work. With all our achievements in football over the years we have never had an official home ground. Now we do. And this will do a lot for our development as a team. We can now train, exercise and have practice matches at home.

We are very happy for that,”Auguste mentioned. He concluded, “We always have a good season. Win, lose or draw we always do well and do our best. The girls have had a hectic July/ August.

They competed as the Debe All Stars in the national women’s league and have been quite busy over the holidays. We are still going in with our mindset, one game at a time.” Debe High begins their competitive campaign against Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive on September 13.
