Maple Leaf International ended its season on a high, being the only team to evade an assault by North Zone champion, Providence Girls, as the second round of the Girls Secondary Schools Football League came to an end yesterday.

The encounter ended goalless, and though Maple Leaf girls will have to settle for third place honours in the league, they can boast of being the only team to avoid a defeat by Providence.

The girls from Belmont now have a tough road ahead as they move on to the national semi-finals on Sunday, in which they will meet Toco Secondary.

If they get past the East Zone champion, they will have a shot at defending national champion, Debe High, which will meet Roxborough Secondary for its berth in the final.

Debe eliminated Providence in the final last year before going on to beat Signal Hill Secondary to claim the national title.

North Zone’s second place finisher, St Joseph’s Convent also ended its season on a positive note, with a 3-0 victory over Malick Secondary, with its leading goal scorers, Tiana Bateau, Megan Murray and Tinika Edgehill each getting a final goal to their names.

St Joseph’s will next take the field in the North/East Playoffs starting on October 25.
