Vessigny Government Secondary School earned a place in the Coca-Cola Intercol National final when it defeated North Zone champions St Francois Girls College 4-3 from the penalty spot after regulation time ended 1-1.

The match was played on Queen’s Royal College Ground, St Clair, on Sunday. St Francois forward Asha Jones, who scored in the North/East final against El Dorado, again found the back of the net, midway through the first half. The score remained 1-0 in favour of St Francois at the break.

Vessigny, which finished runners-up in the South Zone to reigning National Intercol champions Debe Secondary, returned determined,  and scored the equalizer with a rare effort from Rachael Sobers. After the full 80 minutes, the match went to penalty kicks.

Vessigny won it with successful shots from the team coach- Kenneth Preddie’s daughter Krystal Preddie, Christina Robinson and sisters, Khadidra and Kadisha Debisette.

After both teams kicked their five shots each the match was still evenly balanced tied at three penalties each requiring sudden-death spot kicks to separate them.

St Francois penalty scorers were Astride Joseph, Mackail-Ann Jack and Chelsea Marie Spence. Vessigny got the winning strike from Christina Robinson.

Vessigny, which were promoted just last season, reached to the final following a famous win over a talented Debe team in the Intercol South Final.

St Francois, had to get past a crafty Providence team in the semifinal of the North/East playoff, and did so with a 2-1 win, before finding a victory over El Dorado East 5-4 on penalties in the final. The match similarly finished 1-1, before going to spot kicks.

Vessigny will face Tobago champion Roxborough Secondary on QRC Ground, on Thursday, from 3.30 pm. Since the season commenced, Roxborough is yet to taste defeat.
