The Shell/First Citizens Championship division Big Five competition is around the corner, and there are two clear leaders in the zones vying for a play-off spot.
In the South Zone, Princes Town West Secondary have already qualified, after winning all of their eight matches with a ten-point gap over second-placed Moruga Secondary.
Over in Tobago, Speyside High still have four matches to go, but have all but wrapped up their qualification for the playoffs with a 14-point lead over Mason Hall Secondary. The East, North and Central Zones, however, are far from a foregone conclusion.
At the start of the month, Holy Cross College had a six-point lead over Valencia High in the East Zone. However, in the weeks since, Trinity College East have had something to say about their Arima rivals’ bid for promotion.
The “Trinity Hawks” have beaten Five Rivers Secondary twice (7-0 and 8-1), and have also beaten Valencia Secondary 3-0. They lost, however, to Holy Cross 1-0 then drew with them 2-2, which leaves them a point behind the zone leaders, with one more match to play against cellar-placed Toco Secondary, while Holy Cross have played all their matches.
In the North Zone it’s a battle between Tranquility Secondary and Malick Secondary, with both teams locked on 19 points. However, Malick have two games in hand.
Meanwhile, in Central Zone action, Carpichaima East Secondary have a three-point advantage over Chaguanas North Secondary with 18 points.
Over in the Girls’ Championship action, Signal Hill Secondary have a three-point lead in Tobago over Mason Hall Secondary with 24 points. Meanwhile, St Augustine Secondary are still one of the top teams in the East Zone, recording a 19-0 win over San Juan North Secondary and an 11-0 win over St George’s College.
Reigning National Girls InterCol Champions Fyzabad Secondary are currently top of the South Zone with 21 points, three better than Pleasantville Secondary. Over in the North Zone, Diego Martin Central Secondary enjoy a five-point lead over Bishop Anstey Port of Spain and look to be well on their way to winning the zone.
