Carapichaima East Secondary are the Coca Cola Intercol champions of the Central Zone.

Yesterday, they needed penalties from the spot 4-2 to prevail over Chaguanas North Secondary in the final at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva, after the scores were knotted at 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

After a fairly decent season in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) where it finished middle of the standings, Carapichaima were in the driver’s seat when Zidane Martin fired them into the lead in the 20th minute, a lead that they took to the interval.

But Chaguanas, beaten twice by its counterparts last year, stormed back with the equaliser in the 49th minute as they remained determined to gain revenge. And in the 76th minute the Chaguanas boys placed one hand on the title when Mikhail Robinson gave his team the advantage for the first time in the game 2-1.

However Theophilus Boyce, the usually prolific Carapichaima striker, spoiled the Chaguanas North party when he found the equaliser with three minutes left on the clock.

Carapichama later prevailed 4-2 from the spot to set up an entertaining semifinal encounter with the winner of the Naparima College/Shiva Boys South final scheduled for Thursday at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

After the game Randolph Boyce the Carapichaima coach said he felt extremely pleased with the victory. He said his side was up against a really defensively disciplined Chaguanas team and had to dig deep to eek out the victory.

“Chaguanas were discipline today, packing its defence and playing off the counter-attack. They had us trailing late in the game but our boys kept their composure and won the game in the end,” Boyce said.

He congratulated Chaguanas on the challenge, saying its football is in good hands.

Today action continues with finals in the North Zone, a mouth-watering contest between St Mary’s and St Anthony’s at 3.30 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, while a champion will also be crowned in the Tobago Zone when Speyside and Signal Hill will clash at 4 pm at Plymouth.
