Defending champions Juventus, Defence Force 1976 Phoenix booked spots in the semi-finals of the 3rd annual SW Touring Tobago Invitational Masters Over 40 Football Tournament at the Courland Sporting Complex, Black Rock.
At the completion of group action on Sunday morning, Defence Force topped group A with ten points, the same as second place Juventus. Both teams recorded three wins and a draw.
The two sides battled to a 1-1 draw in the tournament's opening encounter Saturday morning but the Soldiers ended the round robin stage with a superior goal difference to the defending champions after beating WASA (1-0) on Saturday and got past Bethel (2-0) and Twin Island (1-0) on Sunday.
Juventus edged WASA and Twin Islands by 1-0 score lines on Saturday and then Bethel by a similar score on Sunday to complete their schedule of matches on ten points. Both teams qualify as winner and runner-up. Twin Islands finished third with six points and will face the runner-up of Group B Curepe All Stars. Phoenix came out ahead of Group B with three victories beating Curepe (1-0) and Northside (3-0).
A double by Hayden Clarke and a strike by Assembly Huey Cadette ensured the victory against Northside. In their scheduled final encounter against Break Away did not show and Pheonix was awarded a 3-0 victory.
Phoenix will face Juventus in the first semi-final while Defence Force will face the winner of the play off. Finals are set for later in the day with the winner collecting US $2000 and the runner-up $1,500.
There will be also be special awards: MVP, Golden Boot, Best Fete Match team. The annual tournament is sponsored by the THA Division of Tourism and Transportation, NLCB, Lucozade and Red Bull. Secretary to Tourism and Transportation Tracy Davidson-Celestine is expected to be on to distribute the prizes.
