Defending Digicel Pro League champions DIRECTV W Connection rebounded from last week’s shock defeat at Point Fortin Civic with a 2-1 win over Defence Force in a rescheduled Round Two Match Day Six fixture on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Former Trinidad and Tobago youth forward, Jerrel Britto, scored in the 64th minute, and two minutes later (66th minute), set up another, scored by forward Hashim Arcia, to cushion Connection in the second half before Defence Force pulled back a goal in the 86th minute through substitute Devorn Jorsling.

Britto, making up for missed chances in the first half, produced a cracker from just outside the box to send the ball into the roof of goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke’s netting for his eight league goal this season – tying with Caledonia AIA’s Pernell Schultz and Central FC’s Ataulla Guerra at the top of the scoring list – as Connection took a 1-0 lead.

The “Savonetta Boys”’ advantaged doubled, 2-0, just two minutes later, after Britto’s fed Arcia at the edge of the area, and the lanky forward, who had missed the target six minutes before the break, sent a low drive into the lower far corner of the Defence Force goal.

Goalkeeper Clarke, who had some glove to the ball, had produced a penalty save ten minutes inside the second period to deny Alvin Jones after referee Cecile Hinds ruled that Curtis Gonzales had fouled Colombian Stiven Lopez Concha inside the box.

Britto later missed out on his double, curling just wide of the far upright from inside the box, to the relief of Clarke in the 73rd minute.

Then with six minutes of regulation time left, Jorsling, who arrived as a second half substitute and much needed help up front, sent a glancing header off a Marvin Jones free kick to beat goalkeeper Julani Archibald from inside the box for his sixth league goal this season, reducing the deficit 1-2.

However, even with nearly six minutes of stoppage time played, Defence Force's tying goal never arrived.

The result kept Defence Force fourth, tied with fifth placed North East Stars on 23 points, while second placed Connection (26 points) moved within three points of leaders Central FC (29 points).

Central, winners of this season’s First Citizens Cup and the Rawle Fletcher (Round One) Trophy, conceded defeats in their last two matches, but, not only heads into the Carnival break with overall pole position in the 2014-2015 Digicel Pro League standings.

The “Couva Sharks” also lead the separate standings for the Akeem Adams (Round Two) Trophy with 12 points, ahead of, in descending order, Play Whe San Juan Jabloteh, Defence Force (10 points), North East Stars, Point Fortin Civic, W Connection (9 points), Police FC (8 points), Caledonia AIA (3 points) and St. Ann’s Rangers (0).

Points are calculated during each round, but not affecting the regular overall league table, to determine the winner. The Akeem Adams Trophy has been introduced this season along with the Rawle Fletcher (Round One) and Kevon Carter (Round Three) Trophies in memory of the fallen players, which the titles are named after, and also in an attempt to increasing the level of competitiveness during the lengthy DPL season.

Action in the DPL will resume on Friday 20 February following the Carnival break. See schedule below.
