Janelle McGee goes to New Mexico

Head coach Justin Wagar of the New Mexico Highlands University Women's Soccer team has informed the SWO that he has singed Trinidad and Tobago international Janelle McGee for the upcoming season which starts this fall.

McGee was part of the unsuccessful Trinidad and Tobago’s Women’s Olympic team that was knocked out by group winners Dominican Republic (DR) in their quest to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.

T&T did relatively well, finishing in 2nd place above Bermuda and Dominica and despite dominating the game against DR, T&T were unfortunate not to have qualified for the next round.

In the meantime, New Mexico's head coach added: "McGee will join a NMHU Women's Soccer team that made the NCAA Division 2 National tournament last year as one of the top 40 teams in the nation out of 245 NCAA D-2 teams."

"She received a scholarship to come and be a part of the team and as a gifted and athletic player we're excited to have her join our squad."

"I believe she'll make a good representative of our team and add additional speed and size up top for one of the best collegiate offensive teams in the region last year."

"We might be trying to send another one of our incoming players to train with the team in the future also who is a Trinidad and Tabago descendant and very talented player playing in the US right now, Keenya Pierre, ended coach Wagar."

About Janelle McGee

Janelle McGee is talented versatile athlete who was a four year varsity player for Vanden High school in Vacaville California as a defender and forward. Janelle was team captain her junior and senior years and was voted team Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008 and as the Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010.

McGee was an All-City tournament team selection for three years in 2007, 2008, and 2009.  She has also been a member of Trinidad and Tobago’s Youth National team from 2007 to present. Her goal is to become a sports therapist or athletic trainer and to play professional soccer someday.

We are excited to have Janelle be a part of our team next year. She brings great speed up top and plays hard. She will only continue to get better as a player during her time here at Highlands and will help to elevate our level of play and competition for future years.

About Keenya Pierre

Keenya Pierre is a 2011 grad from Holy Cross Regional High in Surrey British Columbia who plays both midfield and forward. Keenya has played for several high level club teams including Surrey WFC and Coast WFC both in the Super Y league, Langely FC, Surrey FC Pegasus and for the Pacific Coast Soccer 21 league. She was a top 10 goal scorer in the conference for the Pacific Coast Soccer League.

She was a part of Provincial premier cup championship teams in 2007, 2008, and 2010 and was on the Futsal Provincial championship team in 2008 as well as a Olympic Development Selection for Super Y league in Florida that year. Coach Wagar says about Pierre that “She has good speed and can turn and take on defenders off the dribble to beat them and get into the attack. She’ll do well to bolster our midfield play and combine with our forwards near the goal next year and in years to come. She is a versatile player who can cross and shoot with both feet. We’re glad to have her be a part of the team here at HU. Some of her high school clips can be seen here.
