CRAB CONNECTION took most of the match to break down a stubborn Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix defence, before coming away 2-0 winners in a Sportworld National Super League match on Wednesday at WASA Ground, St Joseph.

Victory gave 2003 champions Crab Connection their tenth win of the season and 34 points, but they are still two points adrift of defending champs Joe Public Football Club, who shut out Harvard by a 4-0 margin.

Despite controlling the game, Crab found it hard work against the Tobago team and had just one chance midway through the first half.

Prolific scorer Marlon Warner was a handful all match long for Phoenix and he forced goalkeeper Junior Roberts to tip his powerful shot over the bar.

The Tobago team also had a chance near the end of the first half through captain Dominique Kerr, who ran down the centre of the Crab Connection penalty area but hit a powerful shot straight into the chest of keeper Clevion Frederick in the Crab Connection goal.

Sustained pressure by Crab Connection eventually resulted in a goal in the 60th minute when influential midfielder Marvin Oliver picked up a rebound atop the six-yard box and lifted the ball into the top of the Phoenix net.

Striker Warner continued to torment the Tobago defence, which was well marshalled by the rasta-haired Simon Nedd and Kevin Keith, who looked their best player.

But, it was the introduction of shifty dribbler Brian Wallace that eventually resulted in Crab Connection doubling their lead in the 86th minute.

Wallace, formerly of Pro League champions National Quarries North East Stars, made a few dangerous probes at the Phoenix defence, before finally picking up a pass on the left flank and chipping the ball over advancing goalkeeper Roberts and into the Phoenix goal.
