Athletico River Plate, the 2009 Puerto Rico Football League champions, have been fined US$10,000 and San Juan Jabloteh FC (Trinidad & Tobago) have been slapped with a US$5,000 fine for their involvement in a brawl at the end of last month’s Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship second round Group D match at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar.

In addition to River Plate being put on probation for the rest of the season, their 38-year-old Puerto Rican coach Fabian Zermatten has been suspended for five matches and fined an additional US$2,000.

The CFU disciplinary committee made its ruling after receiving a report from Jamaican referee Courtney Campbell and reviewing a tape of the April 18 match which Jabloteh won 1-0, thus eliminating the Puerto Ricans from the competition.

The Puerto Ricans also had two players, Maximiliano Vallejo and Raul Oswaldo Ruiz, ejected from the match, while Jabloteh’s Cyrano Glen was expelled as well after striking an opponent with his elbow.

Enraged after their defeat, River Plate, with nine Argentines in their starting line-up, attacked some of the Jabloteh players. They also attacked local security, forcing two gunshots to be fired into the air to get the situation under control.

Glen, who was ’clouted’ on the head by Jabloteh coach Terry Fenwick after he was sent off, was also fined US$500 for the infringement on the River Plate player.

Five other River Plate members have been either suspended or fined by the CFU.

The Caribbean Football Union have ruled that all suspensions begin immediately and all fines are to be paid within 14 days.
