The game was played at a leisurely pace since the U.S. had already reached next year's finals in Japan and South Korea, while Trinidad lost their chance of qualifying months ago.

The Americans fielded a mix of first-choice and reserve players as they used the match to give their squad some valuable experience, although they still applied the early pressure.

Jovan Kirovski almost grabbed a goal on five minutes but the U.S. forward, who plays for English first division club Crystal Palace, was wide of the target with a header from 15 metres after connecting with a cross from Greg Vanney.

Trinidad then got into the match and on 20 minutes Arnold Dwarika, their most impressive player, fired straight at goalkeeper Zach Thornton from nine metres.

Just two minutes later Dwarika nearly caught Thornton napping with a 40-metre shot that went just wide of the post.

Trinidad failed to convert two second-half chances, much to the dismay of a crowd of 5,000 who were hoping the home side could finish a dismal qualifying campaign on a high note.

After 52 minutes Stern John's 25-metre drive forced a fine save from Thornton, who had to dive high to his right.

Three minutes later, John threaded a pass to Angus Eve whose weak effort from seven metres went wide of the right-hand post.

The U.S., who had been mostly content to go through the motions, gave a run-out to forward Josh Wolff who was playing his first match since April after returning from injury.

Wolff, whose goals helped the U.S. defeat Mexico and Costa Rica earlier in qualifying, had missed six matches through injury but came on to play the final 23 minutes.

The U.S. finished the 10-match qualifying campaign in third-place in the final CONCACAF group behind Costa Rica and Mexico, who secured their place in the 2002 finals on Sunday with an impressive 3-0 home win over Honduras.

Trinidad finished bottom of the six-country group behind Jamaica and Honduras.
