GOAL hero Kevin Austin says joining Boston United has given his career a new lease of life.

The veteran central defender capped a man-of-the-match display with the equaliser in Saturday's FA Trophy victory over Hyde. It was only the eighth goal of his 20-year career.

After a successful loan spell at the end of last season, Austin joined the Pilgrims on a permanent basis from Darlington in the summer.

By his own admission, the 38-year-old found it difficult to adjust to part-time football after almost two decades in the full-time game.

Austin found himself usurped by youngsters Tom Ward and Nathan Stainfield earlier in the season, but has regained his place in the side and formed a formidable partnership with fellow golden oldie Alan White.

"It was a big transition for me and I found it quite difficult at the start," admitted Austin.

"I was used to training every day and relying on what I did during the week to keep me sharp on Saturdays.

"At the start of the season, that sharpness wasn't there. I've had to make the adjustment and make it quick, but I've settled into it now.

"When I've got spare time, I try and replicate what I do in training.

"There's no substitute for training every day, but I'm enjoying myself here, it's a great club."

Austin believes joining Boston has helped extend his playing days after he contemplated retirement during an unhappy spell at Darlington.

"You've got to take it a season at a time. You can't look too far ahead. At my age it would be silly to think I've got another five years," added the former Lincoln City defender.

"But I'm enjoying my football. I think playing at Boston has helped me.

"This time last year I was at Darlington and looking to call it a day because things weren't going well for me.

"But since I've been here, I've really enjoyed it."

Boston have clearly missed the goals defender Shaun Pearson provided since his defection to Grimsby Town in the summer.

And after finding the net against Hyde, Austin hopes he will not have to wait much longer before finding the net again.

"We've got to keep getting results and if I can chip in with a few goals, that would be a bonus," added Austin.
