"We all apologised to the manager in the dressing room, we let him down" said Kelvin Jack after Dundee had lost to Airdrie "And our fans deserve better than that to." If any of the side had an excuse it was the keeper who had had a fraught couple of days trying to get back from World Cup duty.

But he wasn't prepared to hide behind his mid flight scare when a fire was detected on the plane carrying the Trinidad and Tobago side back from their tie in Costa Rica, and indeed didn't want to talk about the incident. "I was lucky that they managed to get me on an earlier flight than had looked likely at one point, which allowed me to play. My flight got in at 8.30am (on the morning of the match) and Operations manager Jim Thomson picked me up at the airport and drove me home to Dundee. My baggage hadn't arrived though and I was lucky that some new gloves had been sent to me."

New manager Alan Kernaghan had spoken to Kelvin on Friday when the keeper had been delayed in Miami and he said "I considered playing young Scott Murray then, but once I knew Kelvin would be back he was always going to be in goal."

Although they'd spoken on the phone Kelvin didn't meet the new boss until he arrived at Dens for the match, he said "The new manager seems very professional and we all wanted to do him proud, but what happened was we put in a flat performance, and we're all disappointed to have let him down."

On playing after his long trip back he said "I have never felt as tired as this in my life, but I just had to get back to Dundee and get on with playing the game."
