#9 Errol McFarlane vs GuatemalaEven before midfielder Darren Kenton's season-ending injury in Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup semifinal loss at D.C. United, the Rochester Rhinos wanted to add depth.

On Thursday, they announced the acquisition of veteran USL midfielder Steve Kindel and Errol McFarlane, a 6-foot-4 forward from Trinidad & Tobago.

Kindel, 32, signed for the rest of this season and McFarlane, 31, for this year and next. Both deals still need USL and U.S. Soccer approval, so neither will suit up Saturday at home against Cleveland.

Kenton, 30, suffered a broken left leg and dislocated ankle Tuesday. He's scheduled to have surgery today.

With Danny Earls battling an ankle injury, coach Darren Tilley said the left-footed Kindel, his former roommate with Vancouver in 2000, could be key. A native of British Columbia, Kindel has 31 goals in 200-plus matches with Vancouver, which he helped win the USL title in 2006 and last year.

The Whitecaps' youth movement prompted his release in December.

"His ability and passion, I think he's a player Rhinos fans will enjoy," Tilley said.

Player/assistant coach Brent Sancho has played with McFarlane, 31, on the T&T national team.

"I think he'll do well for us," Sancho, 32, said. "He'll come in here and work hard and fight for the shirt. That's the important thing, representing the club."
