Shaka Hislop admits he has become "surplus to requirements" under new Portsmouth manager Velimir Zajec.

But the 36-year-old goalkeeper admits he would love the opportunity to return and play his part in the fight to retain Premiership status this season.

Hislop has been frozen out at Fratton Park and criticised by chairman Milan Mandaric following reports claiming he wanted to join former Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp at Southampton.

It was claimed on the morning of the recent FA Cup tie between the south coast rivals that Hislop was keen to move to St Mary's, with Mandaric retorting: "How in such circumstances can you play him against the team he stated he wanted to join?"

But now Hislop stresses that it was never his intention to cause disruption prior to the cup tie.

Speaking from Trinidad and Tobago's training camp, where he has been on duty for the World Cup qualifier against the United States, Hislop said: "At no point have I said I wanted to go to Southampton.

"I just didn't rule it out. I've just said that every single football club in Britain is an option.

"I'm surplus to requirements at Portsmouth and I have to see what I can do. I've got a family and four kids and I have to start assessing my future.

"I had been hinting strongly to the club that I wanted a new contract.

"Their response had been very positive that I would be staying on, but two weeks later we sold two midfielders and bought a goalkeeper.

"With my contract up in the summer, and Jamie Ashdown a very good young goalkeeper with three years left on his deal, it spelt the end for me.

"I don't know if I will play for Portsmouth again, but if selected I will give everything. My commitment will not change. I'm fully prepared to give it a go."

Hislop, formerly of Reading, Newcastle and West Ham, has slipped down the pecking order at Portsmouth after the arrival of Kostas Chalkias from manager Zajec's former club Panathinaikos.

Ashdown was the substitute goalkeeper when Portsmouth lost 3-1 at Tottenham last Saturday.

Chalkias, 31, who is believed to have cost just £100,000, has kept his own place despite some shaky moments.

Barring injuries, Hislop has little chance of being involved with the squad for Saturday's home game with Aston Villa, but the club insists there will be no talk about new contracts until the end of the season.
