RED DRAGONS star Carlos Edwards reckons Wrexham are about to reach the moment of truth in their League One relegation battle.

Edwards described today's Racecourse fixture with fellow strugglers MK Dons a "cup final," and insisted the 90 minutes could either send Wrexham plummeting towards League Two or spur them towards safety.

Denis Smith's side have not won in the league since their 4-2 triumph over Chesterfield on January 22 and Edwards believes a victory would serve as a huge confidence boost ahead of the season's final stretch.

"I see it as a cup final because we need to get the three points," said Edwards. "This game could determine our fate - whether we stay up or go down.

"It would give morale a boost because we've not won for quite a while, so a win would give us a lift for the remaining games."

And the 26-year-old Trinidadian is hoping an improvement in his own form will help the Dragons secure their place in League One.

Edwards admits being unhappy with his contribution since he returned from the knee injury which kept him out for six months.

"I'm not happy with how I've been playing," he said. "I'm still lacking a bit of pace and a bit of zest. But it's going to get there and, hopefully, it will come against MK Dons.

"I was out for a long time, but I've had a lot of games under my belt now. I should start to perform the way I did last season."

Edwards, who is out of contract at the end of the season, said he would have no problem committing himself to the club, even if they fail to avoid relegation.

"I would love to stay at Wrexham, even if we go down. I want to stay and hopefully things can be sorted sooner rather than later."

Wing-back Edwards said the players are as keen as the fans to see an end to the uncertainty surrounding the club's future as businessman Andrew Smith's bid to buy Wrexham appears to be faltering.

The Surrey-based property developer hoped to complete the purchase by last Monday, but the deadline came and went without a deal being reached.

The club's administrators are said to have asked owner Alex Hamilton to consider other offers because of his failure to strike a deal with Smith.

Edwards said, "We are just like the supporters - we want to see the club survive and in good hands.

"But there is nothing we can do about what is going on and we just hope the fans continue to support us. Obviously, what is going on is in the back of our minds, but we have to focus on our job."

Wrexham are without striker Chris Armstrong (groin) and Scott Green (flu) today, but striker Juan Ugarte and defender Stephen Roberts have recovered from the illness that has ruled out their midfield colleague.

MK Dons are without midfielders Paul Mitchell and Gary Smith and centre-back Harry Ntimban-Zeh (all knee).
