Coventry City are battling it out with Leeds United for the signature of Birmingham City striker Stern John.

The Sky Blues have agreed a £250,000 fee to bring the Trinidad and Tobago front-man to Highfield Road.

But with Leeds also having agreed a deal, it will be down to the player to decide where his future lies when he returns from international duty on Thursday.

John is one of two players being lined up by Sky Blues boss Peter Reid this week. The club have agreed a fee with another Premiership club to sign a central defender.

"We are at an advanced stage and are hopeful that both players will join us later this week," said chief executive Graham Hover today.

"We have agreed fees for them with their clubs and negotiations are on-going with the players' agents.

"Obviously we can't complete medicals or sign contracts until they return from international duty.

"I can't confirm who they are at this stage but I can tell you we are talking to a striker and defender, both of whom are currently at Premier League clubs, and we hope that more signings will follow."

Reid had targeted Black-burn's out of favour centre-back Andy Todd but the fact that he is not an international rules him out of the frame at this stage.

John has been linked with a move away from Blues following Dwight Yorke's move to the club.

The former Nottingham Forest star scored in a 2-1 win over St Kitts and Nevis in a World Cup qualifier at the weekend.
