Justin Hoyte at Millwall

DEFENDER Justin Hoyte is training with Burton Albion.

The former Arsenal and Middlesbrough full-back was released in the summer by relegated Millwall.

Hoyte has not yet been offered a deal at the Pirelli Stadium as his trial has only recently begun.

Brewers boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been searching for cover at right-back, where Phil Edwards starts for Albion.

Dutch-Surinamese defender Kelvin Maynard suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury in the 3-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Derby County.

That was a major blow to the side and to Maynard who had impressed in several roles over pre-season, including right-back.

Hoyte, who can play on the right or left side of defence, has 15 caps for the Trinidad and Tobago national team, most recently playing against Panama in March.

Hasselbaink believes the 30-year-old can add plenty of experience to his side but warned that it is early days yet.

"We've got Justin Hoyte training with us at the moment," confirmed the Brewers manager.

"He has that experience at right-back but there is no deal done and nothing has been offered at the moment.

"He's just training with us, getting fit and seeing if he likes it here.

"We need cover for Phil (Edwards) which we don't really have now and he can also play left-back, which is quite handy.

"Losing Kelvin was a big blow, so we need some cover in that area if we can.

"He's only trained once. It was a good training session but we didn't do a lot as it was the day before the (Blackpool) game."
