HECTOR Sam insisted that no-one at Walsall is sitting on any laurels despite strengthening their position at the top of League Two.

Sam's second goal for the Saddlers was a crucial moment in the match against Wycombe. His 33rd-minute header arrived when the contest was still finely balanced, if not tilting slightly towards the visitors.

Thereafter, the Saddlers protected the lead with their customary solidity for a win that heaps pressure on the chasing pack.

But, said Sam, no-one is getting ahead of themselves.

"It was an important win for us," said the Trinidadian. "We needed to win because we are heading into an important month with some tough matches.

"Wycombe are a decent side and applied a bit of pressure. But we withstood it and that's why we have got such a good home record.

"It was three good points for us, but only three points. Now we've got to push on, against Swansea in the cup tomorrow and then at Accrington next Saturday."

Wycombe manager Paul Lambert was impressed by not just the Saddlers' team but also the atmosphere in the ground.

"Walsall are a strong side and it's a great stadium and atmosphere to come and play football in," he said. "It was a very good game.

"I've got no complaints at all about my players' effort, just their defending, especially with the first goal. Their keeper played well - although if I was 19ft 5in I would hang up there and come for the ball all day!"
