SUNDERLAND, England (AFP) - Dwight Yorke was reunited with former Manchester United team-mate Roy Keane at struggling English Championship club Sunderland.
Trinidad and Tobago star Yorke, 34, completed a 200,000-pound switch from Australian side Sydney FC on transfer deadline day and becomes Keane's first signing since he became manager of struggling Sunderland earlier this week.
Yorke agreed a two-year contract and a statement on Sunderland's website said: "Sunderland boss Roy Keane has signed his former Manchester United team-mate Dwight Yorke."
Yorke and Keane played together in the Manchester United side that won the European Cup in 1999, although Keane missed the final through suspension.
Keane has vowed to curb his firebrand streak while attempting to guide the Black Cats back to the Premiership, while Yorke, who has belied his playboy image in Sydney, was instrumental in last year's title as he shouldered the role of skipper.
Yorke also impressed with Trinidad and Tobago at the World Cup finals in Germany this year and Sydney's new manager, former England defender Terry Butcher, said this month that he wanted to keep him at the club.
However, Sunderland have reportedly offered Yorke 1.5 million dollars (1.15 million US), significantly more than the 900,000 he is believed to earn at Sydney.
Later Thursday, Sunderland completed the signing of Republic of Ireland international midfielder Graham Kavanagh from Wigan for 500,000 pounds on a three-year deal.
The 33-year-old has also played for Middlesbrough, Stoke and Cardiff.
But that wasn't the end of the transfer activity with the Wearsiders then signing Ross Wallace and Stanislav Varga from Celtic just before the transfer window closed.
