Blanco returns as Mexico announce qualifying roster
goal.com

The Mexican Football Federation released the list of players who will represent Mexico in upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The list is Javier Aguirre's first full call-up since taking over El Tri in early April. Perhaps the most notable inclusion is Chicago Fire star Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

Aguirre and Blanco combined once before to help El Tri turn around a struggling World Cup qualifying campaign. Blanco scored goals in crucial qualifying victories to help an Aguirre-led squad reach the 2002 World Cup.

Then, Blanco was a fixture on the squad. Now, Blanco hasn't been a part of the national team for recent qualifying games and in fact had announced his international retirement a year ago.

Blanco is not the only former Aguirre standout to rejoin the national team. Veteran goalkeeper Oscar Perez, who spent last season on loan from Cruz Azul to Tigres, also reappeared at the expense of Oswaldo Sanchez. Aside from Perez, Aguirre called on Guillermo Ochoa and Jesus Corona to round out the goalkeeping trio.

Also returning to the squad is defender Francisco Javier "Maza" Rodriguez, who was not called on by former manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The roster also featured a naturalized player as Guillermo Franco comprised the list.

With a 1-2 record, Mexico will look to change their fortunes at El Salvador on June 6 and at home against Trinidad & Tobago on June 10.

National team roster

Goalkeepers:
Guillermo Ochoa (America), Jesus Corona (Tecos), Oscar Perez (Cruz Azul).

Defenders: Ricardo Osorio (Stuttgart), Aaron Galindo (Chivas), Francisco Javier "Maza" Rodriguez (PSV Eindhoven), Hector Moreno (AZ Alkmaar), Edgar Dueñas (Toluca), Carlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven).

Midfielders: Oscar Rojas (America), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Pavel Pardo (America), Israel Castro (Pumas), Giovani Dos Santos (Ipswich Town), Fernando Arce (Santos), Carlos Vela (Arsenal), Andres Guardado (Deportivo La Coruña), Alberto Medina (Chivas).

Forwards: Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Nery Castillo (Shakhtar Donetsk), Miguel Sabah (Morelia), Guillermo Franco (Villarreal), Jose Maria Cardenas (Pachuca), Carlos Esquivel (Toluca).

I found it very interesting to see that Mexico invited 8 strikers in their 24-man squad. Since Mexico seems to be having a scoring problem (by their standards) in their recent qualifiers, it appears to be a smart move on their part to make it more competitive. Imagine man like Borgetti is now a has been.

Regardless, none of our strikers have scored or created a single goal for us in more than 270 mins of WCQ action recently, yet we persist with them?

Maybe Latas should consider making the competition for starting strikers more intense by adding more strikers to the pool. I noticed he is already heading in that direction by including the likes of Tousaint, and Mc Farlane. I would have liked to see Jagdeosingh and Roberts as well.

Although I am not one to always support sticking laglee where yuh see bird shit but we need strikers who are currently in form not strikers with a reputation.

Mexico's invitees for their next two games:

Goalkeeper: Guillermo Ochoa (America), Jesus Corona (UAG Tecos), Oscar Perez (Cruz Azul).

Defenders: Ricardo Osorio (Stuttgart), Aaron Galindo (Guadalajara Chivas), Francisco Rodriguez (PSV Eindhoven), Hector Moreno (AZ Alkmaar), Edgar Duenas (Toluca), Carlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven), Oscar Rojas (America).

Midfielders: Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Pavel Pardo (America), Israel Castro (UNAM Pumas), Giovani Dos Santos (Tottenham), Fernando Arce (Santos), Andres Guardado (Deportivo La Coruna).

Forwards: Carlos Vela (Arsenal), Alberto Medina (Guadalajara Chivas), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Nery Castillo (Shakhtar Donetsk), Miguel Sabah (Morelia), Guillermo Franco (Villarreal), Jose Maria Cardenas (Pachuca), Carlos Esquivel (Toluca).

Blanco recalled for critical World Cup qualifiers
socceramerica.com

New national team coach Javier Aguirre has recalled Chicago Fire forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who retired from international play last year, for Mexico's World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador on June 6 and Trinidad & Tobago on June 10.

Only one nationalized player, Argentina-born forward Guillermo Franco of Villarreal, is included in the 24-player squad.

Blanco and Franco were among 10 foreign-based players called up.

Aguirre dropped Oswaldo Sanchez, who started in goal against the USA in February.

Mexico is in fourth in the Hexagonal after three games, behind the USA, Costa Rica and Honduras.

Goalkeepers: Guillermo Ochoa (Club America), Jesus Corona (UAG), Oscar Perez (Cruz Azul).
Defenders: Ricardo Osorio (VfB Stuttgart), Aaron Galindo (Guadalajara), Francisco Rodriguez (PSV), Hector Moreno (AZ), Edgar Duenas (Toluca), Carlos Salcido (PSV), Oscar Rojas (Club America).
Midfielders: Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Pavel Pardo (Club America), Israel Castro (UNAM), Giovani Dos Santos (Tottenham), Fernando Arce (Santos), Andres Guardado (La Coruna).
Forwards: Carlos Vela (Arsenal), Alberto Medina (Guadalajara), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Nery Castillo (Shakhtar Donetsk), Miguel Sabah (Morelia), Guillermo Franco (Villarreal), Jose MarDia Cardenas (Pachuca), Carlos Esquivel (Toluca).

Goal.commentary: Analyzing Aguirre’s Surprises

Javier Aguirre finally has a real roster to work with as El Vasco and the Mexican Football Federation released the list of players who will dispute World Cup qualifiers on June 6 at El Salvador and 10 against Trinidad & Tobago.

Javier Aguirre had his first real call up on Friday. Mexican fans all over the world waited patiently, biting their nails as Nestor de la Torre was getting ready to reveal the roster.

De la Torre started:

Guillermo Ochoa, Jesus Corona

No surprise there.

Oscar Perez

Wow, el Conejo is back really surprising.

Ricardo Osorio, Aaron Galindo, “Maza” Rodriguez

I’ve been saying it for months Mexico need him.

Hector Moreno.

Finally he gets called back up.

Edgar Dueñas and Carlos Salcido. Oscar Rojas, Gerardo Torrado, Pavel Pardo

Didn’t expect him in the line up.

Israel Castro, Giovani Dos Santos, Fernando Arce

NO!

Carlos Vela, Andrea Guardado, and Alberto Medina. Cuauhtemoc Blanco

Speechless.

Nery Castillo, Miguel Sabah

Finally.

Guillermo Franco.

Skeptical about this one.

Jose Maria Cardenas and Carlos Esquivel.

This team is the team that will save Mexico. Good job, Mr. Aguirre! After the announcement it was clear that the changes had been made, this was his team. The roster had surprises not only by the players that were called up but by the ones left out.

The surprises:

Oscar Perez -  El Conejo was present for Mexico’s 2002 run in the World Cup. Some say he might be too old but we’ve seen that age is not a real factor between the posts. Some keepers seem to hit their peak in their mid- or late-30s; a good example would be Dutch 'keeper Edwin Van der Sar. Now if Perez is at the same form as he was in 2002 but I don’t think he is. But Aguirre could just be bringing him in to support both Guillermo Ochoa and Jesus Corona.

Francisco “Maza” Rodriguez - The PSV defender is finally back in the green, white and red. Mexico have been in need of a big and physical defender. He can be well used against teams like Trinidad & Tobago and Honduras, which play very physical football.

Hector Moreno - We knew he was bound to return to the squad; the question was when? Aguirre brought him despite a recent injury that he had and very limited playing time at the end of the Dutch season. Moreno plays as center back and by the looks of the other players he should be able to start in the upcoming games.

Pavel Pardo - Aguirre did not have anything to do with him in his first stint as coach with Mexico. Pardo gets his chance with Aguirre but only after having a poor performance in the Clausura. The veteran midfielder is a proven leader though and that’s what Aguirre needs.

Guillermo Franco - Really surprised by this pick. Franco hasn’t had the best of seasons with Villarreal. The Argentinean born is the only naturalized player in the squad. What Franco could bring is just experience in my opinion. He does fit well in what Aguirre seemed to be looking for and that was to get more experienced players in the squad.

Cuauhtémoc Blanco - The most surprising of all. Blanco comes back from retirement to help lift Mexico, kind of reminds one of Rocky V. Blanco did mention that he would come back if Mexico ever needed him. Blanco has played pretty well with the Fire this year having one goal and five assist. But Aguirre and Blanco are not the best of friends and we have to see if their relationship interferes with the plans.

Also surprising were the players that Aguirre did not call up. There is Jonny Magallon, Leandro Augusto, Antonio Naelson Zinha and Vicente Matias Vuoso who practically scored all the time for Mexico. These players were regulars with Sven Goran Eriksson. Will they ever play for Aguirre? That is yet to be determined there are many games to be played including the Gold Cup tournament which could see the return of some of these players.

All in all the squad is a good one; of course they will be cut down to 18 once they start to play. Aguirre came in with a vision and it is coming true. The squad features a lot of veteran leadership
that was lacking. The younger players just do not have the same pride for their country as Blanco would have. This is the team that will save Mexico.

Mexico don't have any strikers that really frighten opposition at the moment, so the search is on.
None of those who are invited and were not there before are really top form strikers.
Sabah is an interesting invite and he could score goals.
Everybody know about Castillo, who I like as a player, but he went Jeckle and Hyde over the last year or so nobody knows how he will perform (or if he will even show up).

Mexico change time to play
sportsya.com

The game between Mexico and Trinidad Tobago at the CONCACAF Qualifiers was delayed half an hour; so, it will be held on June 10 at 20.30.

Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF) confirmed the change in the time the game between the national team and Trinidad Tobago will be held in round 5 at the CONCACAF Qualifiers.

Therefore, the game will take place on June 10 at 20.30 (not at 20) at the Azteca stadium.

It must be said that El Tri rank fourth at the general standings with three points, so they will have the chance to face a South American team in a playoff game to get qualified for next World Cup; Trinidad Tobago rank fifth with one less point.

Cuauhtemoc lambasts Eriksson
sportsya.com

The Mexican striker keeps criticizing El Tri former coach and praised Javier Aguirre, "who talked to me and told me about my situation at the team clearly," he said.

Chicago Fire (MLS) striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco said he accepted the idea of returning to Mexico soccer team because current coach Javier Aguirre talked to him about his future "face to face."

"Of course (Swede Sven Goran) Eriksson is a huge coach, but he never talked to me clearly, as Javier Aguirre did it now," he added.

Blanco thinks there should be a good, fluent communication between a coach and his players in order for them to know what the coach expects from them.

"Aguirre told what he wanted from me, and it's important because it means there's a fluid communication. So, I know whether I'll have a chance to play or I'll be on the bench," Blanco remarked.

The player walked away from El Tri in October 2008 because he felt rejected by then coach Eriksson; now, Javier Aguirre is back, and he will have a chance to start all over again when the team faces El Salvador (June 6) and Trinidad Tobago (June 10).

Maybe Erikkson used tuh text him.
