Davies expects to make full recovery

In his first interview since being seriously injured in a car accident that killed another passenger, U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies said he expected to make a full recovery. Asked by Jeremy Schaap on ESPN's "SportsCenter," "By the World Cup?", Davies responded, "By the World Cup."

"They think I'm going to make a full recovery and the doctors said they'll be looking forward to seeing the World Cup this summer," said Davies.

Asked what it was like to survive an accident that killed someone else, "I mean, that's hard to say. I know I've become a lot more emotional since the accident, and it's definitely one of those things that really shakes you up and has me thinking at night a lot. My mind will be racing, and it's one of those things that I think eventually I'll get over, but it's definitely a difficult time and it's a time that's made me grow as a person."

Davies on remarkable path to recovery

Charlie Davies is lucky to be alive. He knows it, and even if he were to forget, there are plenty of reminders.

There are the surgical scars that now tattoo the American soccer star's body. There are the constant reminders from family and friends who never let him forget what he nearly lost, and what he has already overcome. Then there are the pictures burned into his memory of the mangled car he was pulled from after he survived a car crash that killed another passenger on Oct. 13. Davies, 23, sustained multiple serious injuries (a broken right femur and tibia, a broken left elbow, facial fractures and a lacerated bladder). The prognosis was that he would face an arduous six- to 12-month recovery and extensive rehabilitation.

The strongest reminders of how fortunate Davies is come from Davies himself as he pushes through what is shaping up to be a miraculous recovery from that laundry list of major injuries. Less than four months after the crash that threatened to end his promising career, Davies is already jogging at a good rate and working on agility drills that would have seemed impossible just weeks earlier, when simply getting out of a wheelchair was an exhausting exercise.

Charlie Davies is an unstoppable force with superhuman recovery powers

By Brooks Peck

Soccernet's Ives Galarcep has a fantastic update on U.S. national striker Charlie Davies and his freakish recovery from the deadly car accident he was involved in last October. After breaking his right femur and tibia, left elbow, suffering facial fractures and a lacerated bladder (which somehow sounds like the most awful injury of the bunch) in the crash that killed the other passenger in the car that carried him, Davies is already jogging and doing agility drills just four months later.

Says Ives:

What does this progress mean, exactly? It means that, barring any setbacks, Davies could be back on the field with club team FC Sochaux by April, meaning his chances of playing for the United States in June's World Cup should no longer be seen as a shattered dream.

"Charlie is pretty much light years ahead of where anybody would tell you he should be," said Jim Hashimoto, the former U.S. national team trainer who is overseeing Davies rehabilitation. "When everybody heard about the accident, including myself, it was like, 'OK, this is going to be a long one' -- and it's still going to be a long one, but to see his progress is pretty amazing."

And amazing sounds like an understatement. The report goes on to say how Davies has already recovered from all of his broken bones, has gained back the 15 lbs. he lost because of the six surgeries he's had so far and only has one more on his elbow before he plans on returning to Sochaux for training by the end of February. Wow.

Now, broken bones and surgeries are one thing -- lots of people go through that and come back good as new -- but if you're somehow still doubting Davies' resiliency and superhumanness, read this:

The swelling in his face that was so evident during his interview with ESPN last November has subsided, though a shorter haircut reveals the scar he has from ear to ear arcing over the top of his skull. That scar came after doctors peeled his face off down to his chin in order to repair the multiple fractures that left his facial bones a shattered mess.

THE DOCTORS PEELED HIS FACE OFF TO FIX HIS SHATTERED SKULL! That's like Terminator type stuff.

Says Davies himself:

"I know I can come back and be one of the best strikers in the world. I know with the improvement that I'm making, if I can continue that with this new feeling I have now, it's going to be tough to stop me."

Yeah, he's definitely a Terminator.

DAVIES TAKES NEXT STEP

Just four months ago Charlie Davies soccer career looked to be in jeopardy after a fatal car crash left his body a crumpled mass of broken bones. This week, Charlie Davies returned to France and is expected to resume training with club team FC Sochaux in the coming weeks.

Davies’ comeback is far from complete, but the progress he has made to this point has been nothing short of remarkable. After undergoing multiple surgeries following the car wreck in October that left another passenger dead, Davies has already been running and doing agility drills and he is about to embark on the next step - returning to soccer activities.

Davies is still some ways away from returning to action for FC Sochaux, but his target of an April return should not be ruled out. It remains uncertain how his surgically-repaired bones and joints will respond to the rigors of soccer training, but if the next phase of his recovery goes anywhere near as well as the first four months, Davies have more than enough time to play himself into consideration for a World Cup place.

That mere idea would have been unthinkable four months ago.

SOCHAUX, France (AP) -- American forward Charlie Davies has resumed training less than six months after he was nearly killed in a car accident.
Still recovering from injuries sustained in the Oct. 13 crash in Virginia, Davies rejoined his Sochaux club last week after several weeks of rehabilitation.
He had a little jog on Monday morning, the club said.
The 23-year-old player will keep working with a physiotherapist before joining his teammates within two or four weeks.
Davies was likely to be in the U.S. World Cup squad before the crash.
His injuries included two broken bones in his right leg, a broken and dislocated left elbow, a broken nose, forehead and eye socket, a ruptured bladder and bleeding on the brain.

That would really be something if he made it back...When I first heard about his injuries, I was doubtful about whether or not he'd play professionally again, much less this Summer in the World Cup.

Davies returns to Sochaux training

Charlie Davies has returned to training with Sochaux, hoping to boost his chances of making the U.S. World Cup roster.

Five months after a near-fatal car crash in Virginia, the 23-year-old is working on fitness and doing some work with a ball.

He said Friday that he is "closer and closer to being back" and hopes to play for Sochaux before the end of the season on May 15.

"This upcoming week, I'll be on the field much, much more, and the shots and long balls will continue," Davies said. "More cutting and dribbling, hopefully some finishing."

Time is running out on Davies's comeback

Five months ago, Charlie Davies could not stand on his own. His once sculptured legs shook under the strain of his own weight. His girlfriend pushed him around in a wheelchair because he could not walk.

After a month in the hospital after a car accident in October that killed a young woman and cost him his standing as one of the most explosive young players in American soccer, Davies was swollen, scarred and in a great deal of pain.

"Somebody took Humpty Dumpty and put him back together again," said James Hashimoto, a trainer with the United States national team, who described Davies’s mangled body as a jigsaw puzzle.

Davies misses U.S. World Cup roster

Charlie Davies, whose recovery from serious injuries sustained in a car accident last October was fueled by hopes of playing in the World Cup, was left off the preliminary list of players for the United States roster.

“He remained part of the conversation right up until yesterday,” Coach Bob Bradley said Tuesday after the roster was announced on ESPNews. “We just felt right now, for Charlie, it is in his best interest to continue his rehab and continue to get back to where he was last year.”

Davies was one of a number of injured players Bradley was considering, but he was the most glaring omission. His teammates Oguchi Onyewu, Stuart Holden and Jay DeMerit, who were all struggling to regain fitness, were included.

Charlie Davies caught driving 125 mph

PARIS -- A French newspaper is reporting that American forward Charlie Davies, who nearly died in a car crash last year, was caught speeding at 125 miles per hour last weekend.

The website of Le Progres newspaper reported Friday that Davies was driving an Audi Q7 last Sunday when he was caught on a motorway in France's Jura region.

Davies, who plays for French club Sochaux, was involved in a car accident on Oct. 13, 2009, that killed another passenger and left him severely hurt. He was not the driver.

He suffered two broken bones in his right leg, a broken and dislocated left elbow, a broken nose, forehead and eye socket, a ruptured bladder and bleeding on the brain.

The 24-year-old missed the World Cup.

Davies scored two goals for Sochaux against Bordeaux near the start of the 2009-10 season, but has not yet played on the first team this season.

He has four goals in 17 games for the U.S. and played a part in the run to the 2009 Confederations Cup final.

After an incredible recovery, Davies returned to training with Sochaux in March this year.

Clarksville women pleads guilty to two charges in Charlie Davies crash

By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 16, 2010; 11:22 PM

A Clarksville woman pleaded guilty in Alexandria federal court Tuesday to two alcohol-related charges in connection with a one-car crash that killed a University of Maryland classmate in October 2009 and severely injured U.S. soccer player Charlie Davies.

Maria Alejandra Espinoza, 23, faces sentencing Feb. 18 before U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton for involuntary manslaughter and maiming while driving intoxicated, both felonies.

"I plead guilty, sir," said Espinoza, whose voice was hushed and who briefly wept toward the end of the 15-minute hearing.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of eight years and five years in prison, respectively, but prosecutors agreed to recommend no more than 37 to 46 months under federal guidelines. Espinoza also must pay restitution to her victims and may face deportation.

Hilton permitted Espinoza, a Venezuelan citizen who has lived legally in the United States most of her life, to remain free on her own recognizance, but ordered that she give up her passport pending sentencing.

"This is a tragic case that highlights the fatal consequences of drunk and distracted driving," Neil H. MacBride, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said in a written statement. "No prosecution can take back the events of that night. But we investigated the case . . . to hold the driver responsible for her actions."

Espinoza's parents, both physicians, clutched hands and her mother's head was bowed throughout the plea hearing. They left the courtroom without commenting.

Mike Roberta, 52, the father of Ashley J. Roberta, 22, who was killed in the accident, was overcome with grief in the courtroom and her mother, Jan Roberta, 59, was angry afterward.

"Our family was destroyed because of a drunk driver. She murdered our daughter," said Jan Roberta, of Phoenix, Md. "I feel justice is now finally happening. It has taken a year, one month and three days to come."

Jan Roberta said the family was considering civil litigation against Espinoza and others. Their lawyer, Charles A. Gilman, of Timonium, Md., declined to comment.

Davies's lawyer, John D. Pels, repeated his statement that the star forward "has left it in the hands of the U.S. attorney's office" and hoped to comment soon, including in a victim impact statement for Espinoza's sentencing.

In court documents, prosecutors said Davies suffered fractures to his right leg, left elbow, eye socket and nose; a torn ligament in his left knee; lacerated bladder; and "serious head trauma."

Davies, who was held out of the U.S. World Cup team and has yet to play for Sochaux's first team this year, has undergone "numerous surgeries and significant rehabilitative therapy," prosecutors said. They called his injuries "life threatening and permanent."

D.C. United acquires forward Charlie Davies

D.C. United announced today that the club has acquired forward Charlie Davies. The Black-and-Red have signed the striker to a loan deal from French side FC Sochaux for the 2011 season. The club used its position in the MLS allocation ranking to acquire the forward. United will hold a press conference in the Volkswagen Lounge at RFK Stadium today at 2:00 p.m. to introduce Davies alongside President and CEO Kevin Payne, General Manager Dave Kasper, and Head Coach Ben Olsen. The press conference will be streamed live on dcunited.com.

“We are really pleased to have concluded a deal that will bring Charlie to United,” said General Manager Dave Kasper. “Charlie spent 10 days with us in our first pre-season camp and underwent a full battery of physical and medical testing. He simply looks terrific. Coming in, we weren’t sure where he would be, but he’s great physically, has impressed with his mental approach and we’re excited to see him on the field with us this season.”

D.C. United says Charlie Davies is 'very close' to starting form

D.C. United's acquisition of Charlie Davies promises to energize a melancholy fan base, boost merchandise and ticket sales and provide an inspiring narrative that transcends soccer.

Beyond the ancillary benefits, however, a vital question remains unanswered, and might remain unresolved for some time: Can he play at a high level again?

The fact of the matter is, since his recovery from severe injuries suffered in a car accident in Arlington in October 2009, Davies hasn't appeared in a first-division match. Now he is being asked to help rejuvenate a club that set the MLS record for fewest goals in a season last year and endured its worst campaign ever.

Davies Resolved to Rebuild a Career

Charlie Davies awakened in a daze with 25 staples down his abdomen and thought he was in a hostel in Honduras, where bandits were harvesting his organs.

The truth was hardly more comforting: in the early morning of Oct. 13, 2009, after breaking curfew with the United States national team, Davies had been a passenger in a horrible automobile accident in Northern Virginia. The car had hit a guardrail and split in half. Another passenger died. The driver later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and maiming while driving intoxicated.

2 years for woman in deadly crash that injured soccer star

A 23-year-old Clarksville woman accused of killing her friend and severely injuring D.C. United soccer player Charlie Davies in a drunk driving accident was sentenced to two years in prison by a federal judge in Alexandria.

Maria Alejandra Espinoza pleaded guilty in November to charges of involuntary manslaughter and maiming while driving intoxicated. A passenger, Ashley Roberta of Phoenix, Md., was killed in the accident.

Davies, who was a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, suffered serious injuries and is only recently returning to play for D.C. United after a series of surgeries and months of rehabilitation.

Debut double strike a "special moment" for Davies

The Charlie Davies comeback story took a fairy tale turn Saturday evening.

Playing in a competitive match for the first time since the October 2009 car crash, Davies scored two goals, leading D.C. United to a 3-1 win.

“He deserves every ounce of credit coming back and getting two goals,” head coach Ben Olsen said after the game.

Davies scores twice in D.C. debut to lead win

When the final whistle sounded on Saturday night at RFK Stadium, D.C. United forward Charlie Davies walked toward the far stands and gazed into the crowd.

He looked at the fans who had fueled a comeback he first dreamed of nearly 18 months ago while in a hospital bed just a few miles away, and he cried.

In his MLS debut with D.C., nearly a year and a half after a fatal car crash nearly took his life, Davies scored twice, once on a penalty kick and another with his trademark speed, to lead United to a 3-1 win over the Columbus Crew before a crowd of 18,132.
