Police FC drawn with Jamaica champs Cavalier for Concacaf Caribbean Cup
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

MISCELLANEOUS Police FC, the 2023/24 T&T Premier Football League (TTPFL) runners-up, will face a tough exercise in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup, as they have been drawn against Jamaican champions Cavalier FC and Mount Pleasant Football Academy for the 2024 edition of the tournament.

The draw for the August 20-December 5 tourney was conducted in Miami on June 6, with ten teams split into two groups of five. After round-robin matches (two home and two away), the top two teams in both groups will advance to the semifinals.

The TTPFL runners-up were placed in group A alongside the two teams who contested the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) final last month, as well as Haitian club Real Hope FA. The next team to feature in group A will be the winner of the 2024 CFU Club Shield tourney.

Cavalier defeated Mount Pleasant in the exciting JPL final on penalty kicks to strip the latter team of their 2023 JPL crown. Mount Pleasant is home to the Soca Warriors attacking pair of Kaile Auvray and Nathaniel James, both of whom made the switch to the JPL last season.

Cavalier are no strangers to the Caribbean Cup tournament, and they played both Defence Force and 2024 TTPFL champions AC PoS in the group stage of last year’s competition. Cavalier managed a runner-up finish in the tourney after losing to Suriname’s SV Robinhood in the finale.

Both AC PoS and Defence Force failed to get beyond the group stage last year, and the “Capital Boys” will be looking to make amends as they have been drawn in group B. AC PoS have been drawn with Haitian club Ouanaminthe FC, the Dominican Republic pair of Cibao FC and Moca FC and the runners-up of the upcoming CFU Club Shield.

Last year, AC PoS finished at the bottom of their group with one point from four matches, and they also lost 1-0 to a Moca team which finished the tourney in third spot. Cibao won the Dominican Republic league title last year.

Fresh from their win over AC PoS in the First Citizens Knockout Cup finale on May 29, Defence Force will hope to book their spot in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup by securing a top two finish in the preceding CFU Club Shield.

The top three teams in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup will advance to next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup. A Concacaf release said the competition’s group stage match schedule will be published in the coming days. Former Soca Warriors forward Cornell Glen assisted with the draw in Miami.

'Poon' back with AC Port of Spain, Woodley joins Police FC for Caribbean Cup action
T&T Express

MICHEL POON-ANGERON is back with AC Port of Spain as the 2024 TT Premier Football League Tier One champions head off to compete in the 2024 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup, along with the league's runners-up Miscellaneous Police FC.

The national midfielder had left on an overseas contract recently.

Meanwhile, AC PoS also secured a pair of high-calibre goalkeeper acquisitions for the tournament in national team number one Denzil Smith, and Jabari Brice from Terminix La Horquetta Rangers.

"Poon is back in the team for the season. We were glad to see him go, but the fact that it maybe didn't work out as planned and is back in the squad, we welcome him," head-coach Gilbert Bateau declared.

"Poon was always a live wire on the team itself, in terms of the position which he holds, which is the number six."

The 'Capital Boyz' will be participating in the Caribbean Cup for the second consecutive year after playing four matches in the 2023 edition.

Former CONCACAF runners-up Police FC will be the ninth Trinidad club to participate in the Caribbean Cup.

The 'Lawmen' have been boosted with the addition of veteran striker Kevon "Showtime" Woodley and Ezekiel Kesar, both having made their T&T senior national team debuts this year.

Also joining the Police outfit are national defender Ross Russell Jr from Terminix La Horquetta Rangers, midfielder Mark Ramdeen, and veteran goalkeeper Cleon John.

AC PoS are action on Thursday against Haiti's Ouanaminthe FC at Estadio Moca in the Dominican Republic, the same day as the 'Lawmen' take on 2024 Haitian champions Real Hope FA, at Sabina Park in Jamaica.

AC PoS also will square off against Moca on August 27, in a return clash from 2023 when they were edged 1-0 by the home team.

Meanwhile, Police will take on Jamaican champions Cavalier FC in their second match, on August 29.

Along with Poon-Angeron, the 'Capital Boyz' has also boosted its squad with a few quality players.

There is also the possibility that Grenada national striker Jamal Charles might be back, having like Poon-Angeron departed to pick up a foreign contract at the end of the 2024 local season.

"We have been boosted with the likes of Marcus Joseph, Nathaniel "Spanish" Garcia, Denzil Smith, Shackiel Henry, Wesley John and Joshua Araujo-Wilson, a left-back from Caledonia," Bateau revealed.

"Those are players we brought in to enhance the team for the tournament."

AC Port of Spain also retain core players Duane Muckette, Che Benny, John-Paul Rochford, Jameel "Shooter" Neptune, Maurice Forde, Marc Burns and Sedale "Skem" McClean.

A notable omission is veteran defender Radanfah Abu Bakr.

Bateau anticipates better than their first Caribbean Cup season in 2023, when AC PoS played well, but won none of their matches.

"We were coming out of a pandemic," Bateau noted.

With the T&T league in its off-season, apart from training, AC PoS has concentrated on playing three warm-up matches against a quality Police FC team, both readying themselves for competition.

"The preparation so far has been good so far," Bateau said. "The intention is to try to come out the group, and try to advance to the second stage."

Of the tournament itself, 10 teams have been confirmed.

The annual tournament crowns a champion of the Caribbean and will determine the participants from the region for the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The first eight qualified automatically as champions as well as the runner-ups from Haiti, T&T, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica - all Caribbean countries with professional football leagues.

They were joined by the finalist of the 2024 CFU Club Shield, which concluded with Jamaica's Arnett Gardens FC winning its first title, 1-0 against Grenades FC of Antigua/Barbuda, at the Stadion Rignaal Jean Francisca in Willemstad, Curacao, earlier this month.

Also taking part are 2023 Dominican Republic champions Cibao and runners-up Moca; 2023-24 TT Premier Football League champions AC Port of Spain and runners-up Police FC; Real Hope, the 2024 Haitian Championship winners and runner-up Ouanaminthe; 2023-24 Jamaica Premier League champions Cavalier FC and runners-up Mount Pleasant; along with CFU Shield qualifiers Arnett Gardens and Grenades FC.

AC PoS, Police both held 1-1 in Concacaf Caribbean Cup
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

Reigning Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League (TTPFL) winners AC PoS and TTPFL runners-up Miscellaneous Police FC had similar results to start their Concacaf Caribbean Cup campaigns as they both drew their respective opening matches 1-1 versus Haitian opposition on August 22.

AC PoS and Defence Force were TTPFL's representatives at the Caribbean Cup last year, but both teams exited at the group stage.

Playing against Ouanaminthe in their Group B encounter at the Estadio Moca 85 Stadium in Dominican Republic, AC PoS put themselves in position to get a favourable result when new signing Shackiel Henry bundled the ball over the line from close range in the 34th minute after Weslie John headed a John-Paul Rochford corner across the face of the goal.

AC PoS' goal was scrappy, and Ouanaminthe's goal was of a similar nature, as Joseph Willinx scored from close range in the 52nd minute after Soca Warriors goalkeeper Denzil Smith uncharacteristically spilled a left-side cross from Ovil Phady.

The Ouanaminthe team showed a penchant to shoot from distance in the second half, and both Jean Brevil Delgado and skipper Roobens Philogene fired just wide of the mark from long range in the latter stages of the contest as they desperately tried to get the elusive go-ahead goal.

At Sabina Park, Jamaica in their Group A encounter, Police got an 87th minute goal from substitute Kwesi "Jep" Allen as they salvaged a draw with Real Hope FA.

The Haitian team took the lead in the 35th minute when the nippy Angelo Exilus, a former Eagles FC player, beat goalkeeper Adrian Foncette with a low right-footed shot following a dreadful mixup at the back between defenders Robert Primus and Mekeil Williams.

Veteran striker and new signing Kevon "Showtime" Woodley should have equalised for Police before the half, but he spurned a pair of headed chances. The latter chance saw Woodley's close range header being palmed off the post by Gooly Elien in first-half stoppage-time.

Police seemed to be leaving Sabina Park without a point, but Allen scored with a sweet header four minutes after coming on the pitch to add the perfect touch to a cross from fellow sub Elijah Belgrave.

AC PoS will play FC Moca in the Dominican Republic in their next game on August 27, with Police FC facing new signing Kaile Auvray and his Cavalier FC team at Sabina Park on August 29.

Cavalier FC finished as runners-up in last year's Concacaf Caribbean Cup and are the reigning Jamaica Premier League champs. Cavalier opened their 2024 Caribbean Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Jamaican rivals Mt Pleasant FA on August 20.

AC Port of Spain falter...squander 2-0 advantage in 3-2 defeat to Moca FC
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

STRIKER John-Paul Rochford missed a late penalty as AC Port of Spain blew a two-goal early second-half lead when falling to a 3-2 defeat to Moca FC in the 2024 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup, on Tuesday night, at Estadio Moca in the Dominican Republic.

Having already scored twice, Rochford was on a hat-trick when stepping up to take a penalty with three minutes left in regular time, but his powerful shot crashed off the woodwork.

Rochford's miss opened the way for the home team to complete an unlikely comeback, when converting from the penalty mark a minute into added-on time after AC PoS defender Maurice Forde committed a foul.

Victory placed Moca at the top of Group B on four points, while the "Capital Boyz" have their next two matches at home, starting with Grenades FC on September 17 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

As with their 2023 meeting, which Moca won 1-0, AC PoS dominated possession, but still however left the Dominican Republic without a point.

That looked a most unlikely scenario after Rochford placed the visitors in the lead in the 41th minute after a superbly taken free kick, which left goalkeeper Miguel Baez frozen. Rochford doubled their advantage in the 49th when converting Nathan Lewis' cross into a goal with a back-post header.

Alan Aciar cut the deficit for the hosts in the 51th with a strike in front of goal, following a corner kick, before Gustavo Ascona drew the hosts level, in the 62nd minute, with a left-footed shot inside the penalty area. Victor Sanchez, who came off the bench, provided the assist.

Rochford had the opportunity to retake the lead in the 86', but his strike from the penalty mark ricocheted off the crossbar. And Clifford Thomas converted from the penalty spot for the match-winner for Moca, in the 91st, securing all three points.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Cavalier FC batter Police FC 4-1 in Jamaica
T&T Newsday

POLICE FC were battered 4-1 by Jamaican powerhouse Cavalier FC in Group A action of the Concacaf Caribbean Cup at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

Despite winning the possession battle 56-44 per cent, Police found it difficult to contain their rivals who registered twice as many shots in the game and are now perfect after two matches.

Shaquille Stein opened the scoring for the hosts in the 22nd, firing expertly past Police goalie Adrian Foncette after being slipped through by Christopher Ainsworth.

But Police drew level in the 32nd courtesy a brave point-blaNk header from Kevon Woodley who got on the end of a searching ball from the right flank.

However, that was the last bit of celebration for the visitors as Cavalier took full control of the match in the second half. Cavalier restored their lead with Stein's brace in the 65th, assisted by Dwayne Atkinson.

The latter got his name on the scoresheet in the 77th from a counterattack, and he notched his double in stoppage time, volleying home after Foncette's punch from a corner fell at his feet.

Police are fourth in the standings with just one point after drawing their opening fixture against Haitian club Real Hope FC.

Police FC will tackle Arnett Gardens FC in T&T on September 19 in their next fixture.

AC PoS needs to work on game time management - Noreiga
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Walt Noreiga, coach of T&T Premier Football League champions AC Port-of-Spain, says his team needs to work on game management if they are to get anything out of their second campaign in the 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup at Estadio Moca 85 in Moca, Dominican Republic, on Tuesday night.

Last year, AC PoS endured a miserable campaign on debut in the tournament, finishing bottom of their five-team round-robin Group A series with a lone point from a 1-1 draw against fellow T&T club Defence Force, to show in four matches.

In their other matches, the 'Capital City Boyz' were defeated 3-2 by the Golden Lions of Martinique, 2-1 by Jamaica's Cavalier FC, and 1-0 by the Dominican Republic's Moca FC.

The Army/Coast Guard combination ended third in the group with five points and just shy of a semifinal spot after falling to Moca 2-0, drawing 1-1 with Cavalier and edging Golden Lion 1-0 in their other matches.

So far this season, AC Po - in their first two matches in their five-team Group B round-robin series - have picked up a mere point from their opening match, a 1-1 draw with Haiti's Ouanaminthe FC on July 22, before squandering a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 loss to Moca FC, both at Estadio Moca 85 in Moca, Dominican Republic, on Tuesday night.

As it stands, Moca FC and fellow Dominican Republic outfit Cibao FC share the lead in Group B with four points each from two matches, while Ouanaminthe FC and AC PoS are next with a point each, and Grenades are at the bottom of the table without a point.

In the drawn outcome with the Haitians, AC PoS took the lead through Shackiel Henry in the 34th minute, only for Joseph Willinx to earn Ouanaminthe a share of the points.

Last Tuesday, midfielder John-Paul Rochord scored a curling free-kick in the 41st minute and doubled the lead four minutes after the resumption with a close range header to put AC PoS on the road to victory.

However, Moca FC then mounted a stunning comeback, helped by some sloppy defending from AC PoS, with Alan Aciar scoring from close range in the 51st, followed by Gustavo Ascona in the 62nd, and Clifford Thomas, with a last-minute penalty, after Rochford had a chance to complete a hat-trick from the penalty spot as well but blasted his attempt overbar.

Reflecting on his team's performances so far, Noreiga said, "In our first match against Ouanaminthe FC, we had a relatively decent first half where we passed and possessed the ball well and created openings where we could have hurt the team with better decision-making.

"In the second, we lost a lot of momentum and energy, and we turned the ball over, and our management of the game was lacking.

"The team (AC PoS) was holding their shape, but the boys started to get fatigue around the 60-65 minute mark, and we had to make some adjustments in the team due to the fatigue to see out the game, which earned us a point.

"Then in our second match we again managed the first half well and were able to constrict what Moca was trying to do, and we were able to open up spaces and pass the ball well and show good dominance in the way we wanted to play and was able to create problems for them and led 1-0 at the half," explained Noriega.

"We again started well in the second half by getting the second goal through good build-up play, and at this point we looked comfortable, but then there was a spell where we didn't manage the game properly for about 12 minutes and they came back into the game," added Noriega.

"The first goal they scored from the corner brought their fans into the game, and it gave them that little extra push to keep coming at us, and in that spell, I do believe we could have defended better and managed that period a lot better than we did.

"However, unfortunately we conceded a second goal from them, which tied up the match at 2-2, and from then on it was a see-saw battle where we were trying to manage the boys legs and to get back some sort of stability in the team and try and see the game out.

"We were then given an opportunity to go ahead with a penalty, which we didn't take, and then a few minutes later they were awarded a penalty, which they scored to take the win, and again, these kinds of situations we have to take as a learning experience.

"It's about knowing how to manage the periods where we conceded those goals, and going forward, it's something that we need to work on, and hopefully in the two matches we have at home in September we will get it right."

AC PoS hosts Antigua and Barbuda's Grenades FC, the Caribbean Football Union Club Shield runners-up, on September 17 and one week later also welcomes Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic.

Looking ahead to those two matches, Noreiga said, "We are still in with a chance to qualify from the group, but we have to go for maximum points in our remaining matches if we want to get out of the group."

In Group A, Jamaica's Cavalier FC, the club of T&T winger Kaile Auvray, leads with a maximum of six points from two matches, three ahead of fellow Jamaican club Mount Pleasant, while T&T's Miscellaneous Police FC and Haiti's Real Hope have one point each with Arnett Gardens, the third Jamaican club in the group, without a point.

Do or die: AC PoS square off against Cibao in Caribbean Championship
T&T Express

AC Port of Spain head coach Walt Noriega wants to see more resolute defending when they face Dominican Republic's Cibao FC in a must-win CONCACAF Caribbean Championship match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 8 p.m. today.

The "Capital Boys" are currently third in Group B with two points while their opponents are second on four. A win today will keep alive their chance at progressing to the semi-finals phase, but they will also hope other results go their way.

"We let it slip in the last minute of the game so hopefully tomorrow (today) we take full advantage of the situation and we execute in the attacking part and cut out these last-minute goals that we have been conceding," stated Noriega yesterday during a media conference at the match venue.

"It is about pride and, mathematically, we still have a chance," he emphasised. "We have to hope that something happens at the other end but once we get the opportunity to push for the win, we'll go for that.

"We did the homework on them. It is just the final third we need to correct and just execute and be resolute defensively because we constantly keep conceding goals in the closing stages of the game and that is something we have to look and try to get better," Noriega added.

In their latest game against Grenades last week, AC PoS conceded a goal in added time (90+5') and were made to settle for a draw.

On the possibility of reaching the semis, Noriega said: "We have to win and hope the Haitian team (in their fixture) do us a favour and get full points, to give ourselves an opportunity to qualify," adding, "It is out of our hands and we only have ourselves to blame, but we will go out and give our best fight and see what could happen."

Meanwhile, AC PoS skipper Duane Muckette said it was "deflating" not to get a win in their previous game after playing the way they did. "At this point we just have to bounce back. We still have life and we still have a chance so we have to give everything in order to give ourselves a chance," he said.

"I will have another chance to correct where I fell short. It is about staying positive and working to come back in the next game," Muckette added.

Cibao FC is unbeaten so far in the competition with one win and a draw. A victory today will see them stay in the top two in the group and it will also end AC Port of Spain's hopes of advancing to the semis. Moca FC currently top group B with seven points from three matches.

Cibao FC play their final game against cellar-placed Ouanaminthe FC of Haiti next week Tuesday.

Another 'giveaway,' another loss: AC Port of Spain eliminated from Caribbean Cup
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

OVER TWO SEASONS of the CONCACAF Caribbean Cup (CCC), and local champions AC Port of Spain Football Club have rightly earned a reputation as being defensively brittle.

On Tuesday night, they caved again, losing a two-goal first half lead and falling 3-2 to Cibao of the Dominican Republic. Defeat eliminated the Capital Boys, and again left them without a win in the competition. They also lost the lead for the fourth time in the 2024 CCC. While AC PoS are now out, Cibao have qualified for the semi-finals.

Having spent 2008-2011 with W Connection, 41-year-old veteran Cibao goalie Miguel Lloyd would know a few things about Trinidad and Tobago football. He would have seen talented players similar to AC Port of Spain's, but probably better teams as well.

Nathaniel Garcia, the 31-year-old older brother of AEK Athens forward Levi Garcia, would have also seen some things, having won a few Pro League titles with Central FC before playing abroad with clubs in India and Nepal. He spoke some truths Tuesday night.

"We put up a good fight in the first half and just seemed to give the team the win in the second half, " Garcia said; "almost every game."

While they were putting up a fight, the Capital Boys built a two-goal lead, with late first-half strikes. Forward Shackiel "Smek" Henry, a former Point Fortin Civic and W Connection striker who spent some time playing professionally in Vietnam, put AC PoS ahead in the 38th minute, before Jameel Neptune, the left-back who often does more attacking than defending, put them up 2-0 in the 40th.

Neptune set up the first, his left-side cross, met by Henry's diving header, and for the second goal, Henry then applied a superb side-volley finish to a rebound from Sedale McClean's blocked shot. But given how they have folded in the competition, it takes a long stretch of the imagination to consider AC Port of Spain a professional team.

Talented, yes but probably semi-professional at best. Truly professional teams seldom, and as easily, repeat the same mistakes match after match - that is, allow the opponents to play freely, uncontested and openly. Not that the Capital Boys did not have second half chances. McClean forced a vital save from Lloyd, and the captain Duane Muckette missed the far corner from a tight angle. But since no one bothers to mark the opponents, once AC PoS cannot out gun the opposition, they cannot win.

"We need to start competing," an obviously dejected Garcia lamented, "not just winning the Pro League and think we are the perfect team. We need to go back to the drawing board, play harder, train harder, and learn from our mistakes."

In the second half, AC Port of Spain let in three goals, the first two via uncontested headers from corner-kicks, and the winner coming from a straight pass down their middle, to an unmarked opponent.

From a corner, Jean Lopez got an uncontested header to pull Cibao back in the contest at 2-1 in the 63rd minute, and Rivaldo Correa (75th and 89th) repeated with another header to pull his team level at 2-2. And with the match near completion, just when one thought that at least AC PoS did not throw away the entire game, well, they did it again.

Correa was totally unmarked, down the middle of the penalty area, a straight pass picking him out when he collected the ball and rocketed a straight shot, one too powerful for even vaunted shot-blocker and T&T national goalkeeper Denzil Smith to even get a hand to.

Police TO LEARN FROM 'AC': Lawmen keen to manage match against Mt Pleasant
T&T Express

When Miscellaneous Police Football Club take the field for tonight's CONCACAF Caribbean Cup match against Mount Pleasant FA of Jamaica, head coach Wendell Joseph will be specially guarding against a repeat of what happened to local champions AC Port of Spain on Tuesday night.

AC Port of Spain held a two-goal first half lead against Cibao of the Dominican Republic, but faded to a 3-2 defeat when conceding three soft goals in the second half. Joseph, a former national youth midfielder, said that game management is a major part of a team's success and has to be a big issue for Police FC tonight, when they face Mount Pleasant at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain, from 8 p.m.

"My staff is cognisant to not being victim to what happened to AC (Port of Spain)," Joseph said. "We hope once we get a goal or once we get two goals, we put our foot down, we put our heads down and manage the game well, and hopefully get that victory.

"I believe that having a two-goal lead in a competition like this (CCC), you have to do better," Joseph said. "You need to protect that."

Joseph said that Police will want to remain strong at all times rather than just go into a defensive shell.

"It's not going defensive, it's managing what you have," he said. "Seeing that a victory was so important to AC (Port of Spain) last night (Tuesday), I was really disappointed in the result, because at the end of the day, it was another local Trinidadian team, and we would want them to do well."

Police are currently third in Group A, and two points behind leaders Cavalier FC of Jamaica. Having drawn 1-1 with Haitian champions Real Hope FC - also currently also on four points - and earned a 2-1 home victory over Jamaica's Arnett Gardens last time out, Police will also need to win their final preliminary match against Mount Pleasant tonight to guarantee a semi-final place. Mount Pleasant are also only a point adrift, with two matches to play, and so have everything to play for.

"We expect to get a very physical game from Mount Pleasant," Joseph said. "Our preparation was not bad, coming off the victory (over Arnett Gardens last week).

Joseph said that Police will look to give their best effort. But he acknowledged that there are unique challenges within a team made up of both police officers and civilians. Because of the fight against local crime, officers in the team, including coach Joseph, have had to miss sessions at times or apply for time off.

"It's difficult, but the organisation is the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, the country comes first," Joseph declared. "I have to work tonight. There are others in the team that have to work tomorrow."

"I try to explain to the guys that we are not a full professional team," he added. "We are semi-professional. We are probably playing in a professional league."

He said that being semi-professional required a lot of sacrifices from Police, the 2023-2024 runners-up in the Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League."

We being police officers, having to work and train, and then go back to work....It's a real tiring (thing). We try our best. "We have a lot of civilians as well. We try to explain to them what to expect or what not to expect," Joseph said, "When they are coming into the team, they will know as well, it has days when it will be rough. It has days when we might call (training) sessions and the session has to get cancelled, because I have to work, and the other coaches have to work. It's a work in progress."

A failure to shoot, without taking a touch to prepare the ball, contributed to Police being eliminated last night (windows for "one-time" shots were on). The luxury of extra touches in the penalty area decreases as the level of competition increases. The quality of goalkeeper increases as well and GKs tend to benefit from delay and additional time to address the ball.

The match ended level and scoreless. The truth is, Mt. Pleasant also sealed their fate through poor decision-making in/around the penalty area and thinking that additional touches would serve their cause.

As far as the arrangements of which Police FC complains (work obligations etc.) --- that is not a long-term winning proposition. It won't cut it.

On a side note, under whose scrutiny does the matter of sponsorship of clubs such as Defence Force and Police fall?

Overall, it is time for a gut check of the product being delivered by the teams representing T&T in regional competition. Right now, we are probably getting bang for de buck. Pun intended!

That shouldn't translate into a fitness issue. You signed up for competition, then come to compete. Fitness as an explanation is not acceptable.

Not being sharp is a distinction that could find more empathy but doh tell me about fitness. One of the unspoken/not spoken about enough items related to fitness in the domestic league is speed of play. Playing at a comfortable clip is NEVER going to add a match load that impacts fitness.

Also, yuh doh need to be fit to adopt negative tactics. In fact, if yuh not fit and you are leading a match, maybe yuh should adopt a negative approach to both aid your declining concentration level and the time in which you need to apply any physical/physiological demand.

In sum, poor outcomes tend to be multifactorial.

Bush baths needed!  ;D

Tough draw, tough exit: Joseph disappointed as Police out Caribbean Cup
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

Police went out on their shields.

It was rough, it was tough, it was exciting, but in the end, Thursday night's goalless draw with Mount Pleasant was not enough to see Miscellaneous Police through to the knockout round of the 2024 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup.

Mount Pleasant Football Academy and Police FC put on a show on a night when the rank and file were out in numbers as in past days, supporting the Lawmen with chants of "Police we want a goal!"

Many opportunities came, but not the elusive goal, despite plenty effort from both camps.

"Both teams created a lot of chances," stated Sue-Lae Mccalla, the rugged Mount Pleasant defender and captain, "Both sides came out to attack."

Playing in the Caribbean competition for the first time in several years, Police ended their four-match preliminary competition with five points, gathered from a 1-1 draw with Haitian champions Real Hope FC; a 2-1 win over Jamaica's Arnett Gardens and the gruelling draw with Mount Pleasant, regular season winners of the 2023-2024 Jamaican Premier league, but second to Cavalier FC in the playoffs.

Police's only misstep came from a second half collapse when losing 4-1 to Cavalier at Sabina Park after going into the half level. But with Mount Pleasant (four points) still to play Real Hope (five points) on the final match-day, win, lose or draw, Police are out.

Almost lost for words, the Police and former Naparima College midfielder, Mark Ramdeen, agreed with Mccalla's assessment.

"It was a tough game. Both teams were going end to end," he stated. "The result said so for itself. We went at it, and we drew."

Rated as Jamaica's top football club in the most recently released CONCACAF club ranking, St Ann-based Mount Pleasant made a huge investment into winning the match. Theodore Whitmore, the legendary former Jamaican player was back as head coach, and Mount Pleasant were in Trinidad four days ahead of the match, acclimatising and getting ready to win, hoping for better positioning ahead of the upcoming winners-take-all showdown with Real Hope

"We have to go and win the next game to get through to the next round (now)," Mccalla added.

Whitmore would have been thrilled with the start. Mount Pleasant were intense, probing the wide positions incessantly through Kimoni Bailey, Daniel Green and Shaqueil Bradford.

Alvin Jones' end was under pressure, but unlike AC Port of Spain who melted under the stress two nights earlier, Police stood firm, though shakily at times.

Despite the early trials, it was Police who had the best chances, coming midway through the first half when now 38-year-old veteran Kevon Woodley hit the post after meeting Ramdeen's backward header in the 24th minute. Woodley then set up Ramdeen who had a powerful strike across the face of goal in the 30th minute, and before the half ended, Mount Pleasant goalie Shaquan Davis pulled off consecutive point-blanks saves to stop forwards Kadeem Hutchinson and Woodley.

For the Jamaicans, Bailey also put a low shot wide of the far upright and Kyle Ming shot straight at Police and former T&T goalkeeper Adrian Foncette, all within an action-packed first half.

It was much of the same in the second period, when Woodley and Kwesi Allen both put headers wide from crosses by Joevin Jones.

Throughout, the Jamaicans were also not put off by applying a little, or a lot of rough play, something not always appreciated by Alvin Jones, Ross Russell Jr, Joevin Jones and Kevon Woodley, who did not respond well to the physicality.

Like Davis late in the first half, Police keeper Foncette also had to make two brilliant point-blank stops to keep Police in the match, first blocking a close-up shot from Trinidad and Tobago international Nathaniel "Natty" James, and also substitute forward Nicholas Nelson.

Police head coach Wendell Joseph exhausted all his resources, even using all five substitutes, and at the end, taking the risk of withdrawing solid central defender Rakim Cabie, and pushing the scoring utility player Elijah "Chocolate" Belgrave further up front.

A disappointed Joseph felt the CCC experience will put his club in good stead ahead of the upcoming local professional league season.

"We expected Mount Pleasant to come at us. We expected them to be fast, physical," Joseph said. "We created some opportunities as well, we hit the post, unfortunately we did not score."

For Police FC, the level of competition was an eye-opener.

"Having played in the competition many years ago, the quality is much higher now. We see where as a club, as a team, we are behind with respect to preparation and stuff," Joseph declared.

"We met three proper, professional teams coming out of Jamaica. I believe that is not a bad yardstick to measure how we play and our ability to compete," Joseph said. "We see as a team, as a club we are behind in terms of preparation and so."

Overall, Joseph said the CCC campaign was a successful one for Police, although they did not get through to the semis.

"Disappointed yes. But pleased because it was three top teams that we played against; teams that prepared properly; teams that have proper foundation; teams that have proper set-ups. So I believe that we (Police) are in a win-win situation playing against these teams."

To say T&T's reps were disappointing is an understatement. As others have said, we are being quickly eclipsed by Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic (although they just buy up cheap talent from South America, so meh), and Suriname.

Suriname are a season into professional football, give them another year or two and we will need to worry more.
