Reggae Boyz go down in Trinidad

TRINIDAD AND Tobago beat World Cup finalists Jamaica 2-0 in their friendly football international at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Goals on either side of halftime by Trinidad captain David Nakhid and Stern John highlighted an exciting match between the two Caribbean football giants in front of a capacity crowd of 28,000.

Both goals were created by playmaker Russell Latapy, who campaigns for Scottish first division leaders Hibernian.

A well placed corner from the right in the 23rd minute found Nakhid, who rose above the Jamaican defence to put away a fierce header past diving goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence.

Then in the 53rd minute, Latapy's probing free-kick from outside the 18-yard box was scored by last year's Caribbean Cup MVP Stern John, leaving Donovon Ricketts, who replaced Lawrence, with no chance.

The Trinidad victory was sweet revenge against the Reggae Boyz, who last year unseated them as Caribbean Cup champions at the same venue.

Both teams are preparing for the qualifying rounds of the World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea in 2002, and for the Copa Caribe tournament in June, where they are both in the same group.

The match also marked the return of several Trinidad overseas-based stars who were playing together for the first time in several years.

Among them was the current leading scorer in the English premier league Dwight Yorke of Manchester united. He was closely marked throughout the game by Fabian Davis and Clifton Waugh and failed to score.

Teams: Trinidad - Shaka Hislop, Shurland David (Reynold Carrington), Marvin Andrews, Anthony Rougier, Sherwyn Julien, Clint Marcelle (Arnold Dwarika), Russell Latapy (Travis Mulraine), David Nakhid, Jerren Nixon, Stern John, Dwight Yorke (Irasto Knights).

Jamaica - Aaron Lawrence (Donovon Ricketts), Ian Goodison, Fabian Davis, Chris Dawes, Clifton Waugh, Ricardo Gardner, Winston Griffiths, Garth Peterkin, Theodore Whitmore, Ricardo Fuller (Ainsworth Kerr), Paul Hall (David Johnson).
