During the 1946 Red Cross North-South football classic in front the Grand Stand Queen's Park Savannah, hundreds of soccer fans were left in utter amazement as the South right-winger, Joseph "Babsie" Daniel, spun a web of magic around the North left half, Hylton Clarke.

Clarke, not yet 19, was picked on excellent performances for St. Mary's College that season, and was delegated to mark Daniel out of the game. Daniel was 38, had a long, colourful career behind him, and was considered by the North fans, too old to make an impression against the youthful Clarke.

How wrong they were! Clarke was taught a soccer lesson that afternoon as South whipped North 3-0 in an exciting encounter. More than anything else, it was Daniel's remarkable performance that day which paved the way for South's victory. But most of those watching that day were seeing Daniel for the first time. They had heard of the great Babsie who, after a fine apprenticeship at Q.R.C., walked into the great Maple team of the 1920's and 1930's and became almost a legend. He played a few years with Apex in South Trinidad, both at football and cricket (he was a fine opening batsman who also represented South), but remained a staunch Maple member. By 1940 Daniel was a veteran with many excellent soccer memories to look back upon. He represented Trinidad against all the other territories and at one time, joined his Maple teammates, Clifford Roach, Sydney deCoteau, Harold Achong and Ellis 'Puss' Achong in forming the Trinidad forward-line.

Recalled to the South team in 1946, Daniel demonstrated the class young fans had heard about but had never seen before. Only then did many realise the high standard of football that prevailed in the earlier days. Daniel became coach at Queen's Royal College and later was appointed Government Coach in the Ministry of Education. Even there he joined former Maple teammates, Andy Ganteaume and Carlton John, this time in building the standard of youngsters at football and cricket.
