CENTRAL FC, the California-based Digicel Pro League outfit, staged the first of its four “Football in the Community” events on April 14 at the Crown Trace Recreation Ground, Chaguanas.

The club, entitled “the Sharks”, played a Crown Trace XI and the crowds enjoyed free samples of Carib Pilsner, distributed by the Carib girls from the Carib Pilsner road-show.

“It was another great Central FC event,” said the club’s managing director Brent Sancho. “I’m sure people think that we drag our players and staff kicking and screaming to our community events, but the truth is that they really enjoy the interaction.”

Sancho said unlike other countries, footballers in Trinidad and Tobago do not receive the star treatment. “But when we do these events, the crowds really appreciate the effort from the lads. When we introduce the players to the crowd, they always get a good round of applause.”

Sancho believes the Central FC “Football in the Community” campaign achieves many aims.

“We get close to the community, which is important to build our brand and develop our fan base,” said the former TT defender. “But it also gives the players interaction with the community and, perhaps, lifts their confidence a bit more.”

“The Sharks” will be taking part in several other similar community events over the next few weeks.

“These events are made possible by the support of Super Industrial Services (SIS) and Carib Pilsner,” said operations director Kevin Harrison. “Both companies share Central FC’s recognition of the importance of interacting with the Central community.” Harrison feels that as time progresses, SIS will become even more involved with Central FC.

“At first, we approached SIS for assistance when we organised an event. Now, they call us and ask ‘when’s the next event, and what do you need’ I think they recognise that Central FC are a good link to the community and our partnership is becoming stronger.”

Sancho said more and more people are commenting on the team’s league position.

“It’s funny, but every time people comment that we are only fifth in the League, I take it as a compliment,” he stated. “People expect much more of us and consider us a “big” team. What they forget is that this is our first season. To have achieved so much while building a new team on the field and a new brand off the field is pretty good going.”

Meanwhile, technical director and coach Terry Fenwick commented on the team from Crown Trace. “There were some great players out there on (the) night. Whether or not they have the mentality to train every day is another question, but it’s refreshing to see the level of talent out there.” Fenwick is now focussing on fine tuning his squad for the 2013-14 season.

“We may still have a few games left this season, but I’m already excited about the next campaign. Our main problem has been in front of goal.

“We create the chances but just don’t score enough,” continued the ex-England defender and San Juan Jabloteh coach. “I’ve told my board that I want Cornell Glen, but I imagine Angus (Eve, North East Stars coach) would have something to say about that!”
