With the 0-0 result, Joe Public added the “Big Six” to its league crown. Photos: Anthony HarrisBmobile Joe Public’s Derek King has been a championship winning coach for just five days but already he is warming to the theme.

Last Saturday with a game to spare, Public wrestled the Digicel Pro League crown from 2008 holders San Juan Jabloteh after a 1-1 draw against Caledonia AIA. On Tuesday, the “Eastern Lions” doubled their trophy haul as a goalless draw with W. Connection helped them claim the Big Six title.

Next up is the Toyota Classic competition and King made it clear that Public is only just getting started. On Friday, they play cellar-placed Pro League outfit Police in their opening Classic fixture and the Lions are planning a special feast.

“I am just trying to get back the players mentally after winning two titles in the space of a few days,” the 29-year-old King told TnT Times. “The players are very excited and you can’t take that away from them because some of them have never won a championship…

“I told them ‘we have to play like champions now’. On Friday, we have to come out and give the crowd something special.”

Cue groans from the Police rear guard. The “Lawmen” have leaked goals at a shocking rate this season with 64 conceded in 20 games—18 more than the Pro League’s second worse defensive outfit, St Ann’s Rangers.

The last meeting between the two clubs ended in a seven-nil spanking for Police at Marabella with Public captain and the Pro League’s top marksman, Kerry Baptiste, bagging four items while Conrad Smith managed a hat-trick. Cup matches are rarely such one-sided affairs but Police will be labouring under no illusions about the size of their task.

King might be forgiven for not caring too much that for a change someone else is worrying.
