Ryan Frederick scored a goal in either half as St Mary’s United stunned CRILLE Central Football Association Premier Division leaders Harlem Strikers 4-0 at the Hugo Francis Recreation Ground, Woodford Lodge on Wednesday night.
Andre Nicholas opened the scoring as early as the seventh minute for St Mary’s while Carlon Lewis made it 2-0 11 minutes before Frederick extended the lead to 3-0 in the 34th minute.
Any hopes of Strikers, which has failed to win three of last four matches, clawing its way back in the second-half was ended when Fredrick added his second in the 60th minute for a 4-0 cushion which St Mary’s, second from bottom of the 11-team standings held until the final whistle.
Despite the loss, Strikers stayed top with 23 points from ten matches, but second placed Cunupia FC is now only four points behind after it outclassed Cap Off Youths 4-2 at the same venue a day earlier.
Cunupia, winners of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation-sponsored Hugo Francis Memorial Cup on Sunday over Perseverance Ball Runners, 3-0 on penalty-kicks after a 0-0 draw got a double from Anthony Noel, in the 21st and 34th minutes while Kevin Eastman (63rd) and an own-goal in the 76th minute made it 4-0. Keon Paul and Emilio Smith got two late strikes for Cap Off Youths in the 84th and 89th minutes, but it was too little to late. Also taking advantage of Strikers; shock loss were third and fourth places teams, Enterprise Youths and Las Lomas, 2-1 and 3-1 over Leeds FC and ADL Couva Sports.
