The inaugural Shaka’s Champions League kicked off on Saturday with two games including Arsenal versus Real Madrid and Bayern Munich versus Manchester City (all local teams) at the Aurtis Whitley sporting ground, Malick.

Real Madrid won a close game against Arsenal 3-2 courtesy a double from Madrid’s Michael John. The second match’s winner was Manchester City by a score of 2-1 against Bayern Munich.

City had the most outstanding player, Willis Vincent, to thank as he scored one with teammate Omar Prescott scoring the other. Bayern Munich got their goal from Kerin Salina.

The tournament’s co-ordinator, Dwayne Brewster, also known as “Shaka”, is pleased with the start of the competition since he believes this month-long tournament will help curb the crime situation in the area.

“Shaka” says that the matches and training sessions give the men something to do as he cites idleness as a major reason for them to commit crime.

“When you have all this time on your hands, it’s easier to do something bad than something good,” he expressed.

When asked about what will happen after a month at the end of the tournament, Shaka said he is interested in finding something else to do but needs sponsorship and would like if nearby businesses could help out.

The tournament is open to all ages but for only male payers. The teams hail from Malick, Laventille and Caledonia.

Councillor for the area, Kwesi Antoine, was present and thanked the Serta company for sponsoring the tournament. He noted that if other businesses would do what Serta is doing, there would be an opportunity for people to help lower the crime situation in the area.

The next games of the tournament will be held this Saturday when Arsenal play Liverpool and Bayern Munich play Barcelona.
