G Madrid’s Deron Lewis netted his 10th and most important goal of the season so far in a tense 1-0 win over Manzanilla United in the Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond League on Saturday. The victory preserved the reigning champions’ 100 percent record after five rounds and kept them atop the standings in difficult circumstances.

Playing a man short for more than a a half after a red card, G Madrid seemed willing to accept a share of the points before Lewis, last year’s Golden Boot winner, popped up in the second half to lash home the only goal of the game.

Manzanilla had earlier started the better team and tested G Madrid goalie Aaron Ali with a couple long range free-kicks that were easily held. G Madrid also tried their luck from distance but found the Manzanilla goalie in good form too. But as they began finding some momentum, lost one of their players to a straight red card for obscene language just before the interval.

Manzanilla, enjoying the numerical advantage for the entire second half, were unable to utilise the extra man properly and soon fell into the trap set by their opponents.

Lewis had fired a warning shot, latching onto a long pass before shifting onto his right foot but his low shot was blocked. Another counter-attack saw Lewis played through on the right and he smashed his shot past the Manzanilla goalie and into the net. Frustration began to show among the Manzanilla players as they were repelled again and again by a disciplined G Madrid back-line.

In the earlier game on Saturday, Dragon continued their ascent in the standings with a 5-1 drubbing of North Oropouche.

In other results, Old School defeated Spartan 1-0 while North Oropouche whipped the hapless Boys Town 4-1. The match between Coca All-Stars and Dream Team is before the Fishing Pond League committee.
