Newcomers Football Club of Fyzabad and Los Bajos United of Palo Seco will clash in the final of the 2009 Southwest Superleague on Sunday at the Fyzabad Recreation Ground.

Kick-off time is at 3.30pm and for the first time, there will be a champion football team from the “deep” south.

Newcomers won their place in the final with a nail-biting 3-2 win over La Brea league Champions Vance River Juniors last weekend in the first of two semi-final matches.

The La Brea team took the lead in the eighth minute through a striker Wesley John, before Lester Edwards got the equaliser, with just three minutes gone.

The Fyzabad men went further ahead in the 17th minute through Glendon Reece and added a third item in the 36th from the boot of Kassif Bass.

Vance River Juniors fought back in the second half but were only able to score one more goal in the 46th minute through the Superleague’s top goal scorer Nathan Homer.

In the other semi-final Los Bajos United created a minor upset when they beat the powerful Mahaica United team 5-4 on penalty kicks.

Mahaica took a comfortable 2-0 lead with a double strike from Andre Alexis in the 28th and 35th minute.

Early in the second-half Los Bajos pulled one back but fell further behind in the 60th minute when Mahaica took a 3-1 lead.

Los Bajos fought back and in the 68th minute made the score 3-2. However, Mahaica added a fourth item before Los Bajos stormed back in the final minutes to earn a hard fought 4-4 tie.

The match went to penalty kicks and the Palo Seco team came out victorious and advanced to Sunday’s final.

There will also be a battle for third and fourth positions in the league between Mahaica United and Vance River Juniors. It is carded for Saturday at the Brighton Sports Ground in La Brea.
